So I've seen Freelancer mentioned around here a few times.
Now, from my experience, I see something amusing among my friends:
- Most love Freelancer.
- Most never heard of Starlancer.
- The few that played Starlancer (all three of us) were sorely disapointed with Freelancer.
I played the hell out of Starlancer. It was a hell of a successor to the Wing Commander series, more specifically, of Wing Commander IV: The Price of Freedom. So I was excited to hear about Freelancer.
However, all had changed. The game skipped to a full millennium in the future, with the intro video casually dismissing your efforts in the first game (that was quite gutting). The missions and atmosphere completelly lost the grittiness, tension and fight-against-the-odds that you felt on the Reliant and the Yamato.
The plot was non-existant, and the enemies forgetable. And the ship models... oh dear, those awful spaceships...
The only thing the game had going for it was the freedom you had to explore, but both X3 and I-War 2 did it better!
So, am I alone in this?
