I recently won a bid (Ebay) on Star Ocean International for PS3 and am currently waiting for it to grace my mailbox with its presence. So, while I wait, my patience slowly but surely wearing thin, I'm wondering: did I just waste $50 on this? How is this game? Will I enjoy it? Why the hell didn't I buy Resonance of Fate?

So tell me, did you play this game, and if so, did you enjoy it? Just to give some background, YES, I love RPGs of all shapes and sizes - JRPGs, old school (Planescape: Torment = awesome), new school, whatever. Be honest ;)

P.S. First thread...w00t!

Random video to post...is this supposed to be evidence of the game's crappiness? Believe me, I can deal with tiny puffy annoying girls - I played through most of Eternal Sonata with minimal gripes...

If it was just that character.

It's just that the whole cast is like that.

You only need to watch a couple of random cutscenes on youtube to realize the writing, characters and voice acting are beyond awful. I mean, you wonder how a group of people so evidently talentless were ever put in the position of making something. So fucking bad.

Good heads-up, though a little disappointing...I usually prefer to put the voices back to the original Japanese speech if I'm given the option - I watch enough anime, subtitles and Japanese don't bother me. Here's hoping that improves things.

Opinions on gameplay? It isn't too much of a grind, is it? Good combat?

Personally, I thought it was brilliant. If you can get past the voice acting. It kind of throws back to the Star Ocean on the snes in terms of story, but from how far I got into it, I thought it was great. Combat wasn't bad either, once I got the hang of it. It can be a little tricky, and sometimes you will need to grind a little to have more than a snowball's chance in Hell to survive an upcoming boss fight, but all up it's not so bad.

Thanks for that! Not familiar with any other Star Oceans, though I've heard that it's okay, as this one is somewhat of a prequel? I don't mind a bit of a grind myself - I understand the necessity of needing to buff up before a particularly challenging fight. Looking forward to this, then!

By the way, welcome to the forums!

The one thing I'll give Star Ocean. It's awe inspiring combat.
Seriously, once you got into the game a bit, every attack led to a spectacle that I've only seen rivaled in other over the top anime games like DBZ. If there is anythin that I love about games, it's the spectacle of the fight that they provide.
Though as the above video showed......the characters....it's painful....to...watch.......GAH! I can't do it. All they need to do is fix that problem and I'll definitely buy it.
Also I hope they put Arumat back in, he literally saved the game for me. I was so close to just throwing it away when I got him. But he showed me not all the characters were complete children.
