Star Ocean: the last hope..is it wrong that i like it?

Ok, let me start this from the beginning: I haven't liked a single game Square has made ever since Final Fantasy 7 (Kingdom hearts and Drakengard don't really count, as they were made in collaboration with other companies eg. Cavia, Disney). Final Fantasy 10 had a lead character (Tidus) i badly wanted to see get killed and overall it just didn't...click with me i guess (I enjoyed the characters other then the lead character but..eh, just didn't grab me). Entry 12 upped this by placing not one, But TWO main characters i wanted to see dead (Vaan and Panello)...it's bad enough when you make me miss Tidus, but the games combat was more like an MMO and the story just seemed kind of uninspiring as did everything else. Final Fantasy 13 i found to be better then 12, although thats not all that hard to do if you put your mind to it, but....well it was just overall boring. I think it was mainly the cutscene overuse and the linearity that turned me off it, but i just found it boring. (And no i havn't played entry 8 or 9 in the series cause Playstation 1 games are damned near impossible to find nowadays where i live)

So, i decided one day to pick up Star Ocean: the last hope because it was cheap and i had some strange urge to give it a go. So, i start playing it and about part way after the first planet i experienced something that i hadn't experienced with a Square game since Final Fantasy 7....i was actually having fun, but the thing is i don't know why.

Maybe its the fact it's a Science fiction setting to a degree, maybe its the fact that you can actually have conversations with party members back at the base, maybe it was even the combat system and setting but...I'm having fun with it.
Ok, the characters are nothing much in originality but they are atleast tolerable and the story seems to be a bit over the place, but you can still follow along with events..and the fact I'm staving off wikipedia to find out what happens next is a sign that I'm having enough fun to not go spoil it for myself. Plus, while the english dub is pretty bad it isn't the worst i've ever heard.

I guess the point of this topic is basically...did anyone else experience something like this with Star ocean and possibly be able to explain to me why i like it so much? Or, you can discuss games that you went into thinking you'd hate and somehow ended up liking. Either way, up to you.

I am a JRPG player and Star Ocean 4 was not a bad game, it's just not a great one, a competent game I must say, though it could have been much more.

It's a first Next Gen JRPG I played, but the things that killed it were the Cliche story, some annoying characters, and totally forgettable OST.

The rest of the game is actually pretty good and if you are a JRPG fan and was disappointed by Square's failure with their main franchise I don't blame you.

I liked it to when I started but near the end the characters began to really bug me, I don't want to spoil it for you but I'll just say Edge became far to whiney for me and you want to know something. This is coming from someone who actually thought Tidus was an awesome protagonist. Star Ocean's story and characters eventually became to much for me, but other than that it is a very fun RPG with some genuine good bits but I just stopped playing towards the end. Quick note I don't think its wrong to like any game. The story, design and characterisations are always going to appeal to some more than others and people shouldn't be put down because of this.

I've found it...interesting so far, mainly in the combat system, the story I haven't really seen too much of (I'm only up to the first boss). Thing that really annoys me is the massive rarity of healing items and the large gaps between save points.
Still, I'm enjoying it.

They had me hooked after "earth". The emo crap that followed, not so much. But the main plot is really good.

Not at all, I've been a fan of Star Ocean since the second which remains my favourite of the series, with the Last Hope coming second. The voice acting may be irritating, and the game may be filled with annoying characters, (I'll never get bored of Myuria though), I found it very fun to play and the story was pretty good in my opinion, it added enough gameplay options to make it different from the previous installments and and I thouroughly enjoyed it. Thought it didn't have the same form of recruitment as the old games did, as you only got a strict, linear method of getting characters with no options between which ones you get. Also Star Ocean is made by Tri-Ace and was published by Square-Enix which might be why you felt differently about it.

I like it, too, at least more than TtEoT. It was kind of hilariously bad at parts, which is always fine by me. The characters were annoying, but not in a "bad" way; the only one I couldn't actually stand for the life of me was Sarah, or whatever she was called (the bird lady). Fuck her with a rusty spoon, to be honest.

I couldn't stand the game. It's obviously not "wrong" if you like it, to each their own. Personally I couldn't stand the combat system - it was similar to Tales of Vesperia's but without the control, skill and flow. The thing that ruined the game for me, however, was the main plot - you stated you enjoyed it, and I can understand where you're coming from as in the early stages the plot does seem interesting, but later on it becomes so enthralled in pointless side-missions, in angsty drama that makes no sense, in this stupid "we gotta help every single person with any kind of problem" mentality and there're some huge, stupid, unbeleivable plotholes - I'm talking...

...The lead character of Infinite Undiscovery [Tru-Aces game before SO4] somehow comes back to life in an impossible way so they can have a happy ending - defeating the whole point of the story...

...level of idiocy.

I guess the issue with JRPG's this gen I have is that I played Lost Odyssey first [pretty much this gens "true" Final Fantasy]. This games story, characters and general atmosphere just can't compare. There're some decent moments, and I particularly enjoyed the art style in places, but overall the environments are dull and unwieldy [the game abuses bloom lighting, but does it badly] and towards the end of the game it gets very "samey".

And don't get me started on the weird crafting system, the repetitive dungeons, the stupidly over-powered bosses and the completely forgettable soundtrack...

Yeah, this posts a mess, but then again, so is Star Ocean 4's narrative and character development so I guess it fits in a horrible sense...

Yes, you are a horrible person for having personal taste and a subjective personal opinion and you must be shot in order to protect the world from the deadly disease which is your individuality.

. . .

Seriously, why do we have these "Am I a horrible person for liking (insert game or movie)" threads? Liking a movie doesn't make you a bad person. I mean, as much as I hate Twilight (and I fucking hate Twilight), I don't call the people who like Twilight evil for liking it. They're evil for keying my car because I didn't like it.

It's not so much a 'am i a horrible person' thing as a 'surprised i like something i thought i'd end up hating' thread. Literally say the words 'square enix' and you'll likely get a collective groan of annoyance from most of the gaming world nowadays. As i said, i'm just surprised i found myself liking something from a publisher whom i've found myself rarely if ever enjoying their main titles.

I'm in your boat, too. Granted, I do like some things Square does, but only a handful of games. I found about half of the characters to be likable and the other half to be massively lame. DO NOT GO TO WIKIPEDIA. THE ENDING IS AWESOME.

...They really should have stopped trying to expand the Star Ocean universe after the Second Story, in my opinion. 1 and 2 were great games... 3 was playable, if occasionally painful. 4... well, the game mechanics are mostly intact... but story and characterization were completely dead. Eventually I gave up and just read a synopsis. Glad I did.

My 4th favourite game of this entire year.... so no, I don't think it's wrong to like it
Then again, my opinions here aren't very well accepted or at least, not shared by many >>

It's not WRONG to like any game you enjoy. It's only wrong to think it is based upon the opinions of others.

I liked it. Not my favorite but I enjoyed it. /shrug
