So the first trailer of Star Trek: Beyond has been released. The trailer seems like those of us hoping the movie would use the issues and technology demonstrated in the previous two movies to make a movie that was both actionpacked and still a Trek movie will be upset, and the movie seems to be more in line with an action adventure that once again shows us that the Abramsverse is not so much a Trek reboot as it is a series of generic forgettable action movies using the Trek name to try and sell more tickets then they'd otherwise do.

Really disappointed with it given everything that Simon Pegg has been stating about it, since he's one of the writers for it, though like Into Darkness it seems to be a case of "one person knows what he's doing, two do not".

I was gonna say it looks like a Fast and Furious movie, but then it turns out its made by the same people.

So...that's sad. And I gotta say I'm disappointed. I thought with the previous one having that crazy military industrial complex Captain building the huge semi-automated Dreadnought of a ship that could "operate with minimal crew" and that Kirk "Didn't know what was coming!" that they were setting things up for the Borg.

Think about it. Heavily armed and armored ship, operates with a small crew, could be 100% controlled from the bridge(in case of boarders) and something big was coming.
Sounds like the Borg to me. And it adds a twist that the evil Captain man wasn't evil at all. He was just a dick trying to do whatever he could to help stop the Borg.

Alas...

Actually the reason the Vengeance was built was to fight the Klingons. In fact the whole plot was about provoking a war with the Klingons because the Federation wasn't ready for the inevitable war with the Klingons (I know, makes no sense). The Borg where never hinted at in the movie.

What's sad is that the elements from Into Darkness have the perfect set up for a movie about interplanetary teleportation where ships like the Enterprise are obsolete, but an evil A.I. is using transporter 'glitches' to make people it wants removed end up in a rock-face.

Right? And yeah I know the Borg weren't mentioned, I'm just saying with what was said one could interpret it as the Borg. As you said, the idea that evil-Captain man built the Vengeance to trigger a Klingon war that he himself doesn't believe Humanity is ready to fight is...well its just dumb.

But the idea of needing an entire fleet of Vengeance class dreadnoughts to fight whatever our deep-space explorers found(Borg wink wink) is a WAY better plot and twist.

If that was the case wouldn't the logical thing to do be to do like the Defiant and make a small warship that was effectively guns, an engine and the bare minimum equipment to make it work as a ship? After all the Defiant was made specifically to fight the born.

Have I been living under a rock or was it a thing to release new trailers during December?

OT- Look ok I guess.

Ultimately, yes. But if I recall my Trek timeline correctly, the Defiant wasn't commissioned until after Wolf-359 and the Federation's loss of their big fuck me dreadnought fleet.
So you could still have evil-Captain face get his fleet because he doesn't know better. And then in the 3rd movie, have the battle at Wolf-359 and the Federation's massive casualties.

That way you get the Defiant.

I'm baffled too. This, Batman vs Superman and Independence Day 2. Then again one of those thought it would be a good idea to release in March of all times because...?
Actually that one is a result of the fact that due to how the different blockbuster movies that are coming out this year are spread out there's no more opportune time then late March. Having two blockbusters come out too close to each other is bad for both companies after all.

Looks pretty meh, and this is from someone who couldn't have cared less about original Trek, and liked the reboot just fine. I'm sure Abrams will get the blame for it again due to Bad Robot's involvement, although I'm waiting with bated breath for someone to discover it's been the writing crew that was the true culprit from the beginning.

All those trailers will be screened before Star Wars 7.
That's very good marketing.

This is the reason I am dreading the new Star Wars movie. JJ Abrams have given a lobotomy to the Star Trek reboots. It's really insulting to fans who loved the original IP. I can only imagine what kind of horrible ret-con he is doing to the new Star Wars. Wookies are not covered in fur. They are just wearing hairy burkas.

Star Trek never really held a dear place in my heart. I have a certain level of respect for it, in the same way I have a respect for like, the Mona Lisa or something. I can see its cultural significance, and I understand why so many people cherish it, but it means next to nothing to me.

So yeah, this trailer looks alright. I have no idea what's going on but it looks like more of the same fun the last two movies were so I'm down with it.

The difference is Abrams was never a Trek fan. Trek was all about the money for him. He's always been a massive Star Wars fan though, so he has a personal drive to do it justice, whatever that means to him. For better or worse, you can at least expect him to TRY with Star Wars.

Wait, people don't know about Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman? that the tend to write them selves in to stupid corners and then some random bullshit that ruins the story to get them out of it? i mean all the stupidest stuff on Alias, Lost, Transformers... well everything they have ever touched.

I have been reading a couple of articles regarding JJ Abrams's approach to Star Wars. I think you're right. However, seeing this trailer less than a week before The Force Awakens comes out doesn't give me a lot of confidence that Star Wars Ep. 7 is going being good.

Star Trek has been pretty near and dear to my heart ever since I was a child watching The Next Generation. The 2009 movie, which was not a reboot so much as an alternate time line was, well, alright, it's sins forgivable because it takes place in an alternate universe, effectively ignoring the prime universe. So then they decide to retread Wrath of Kahn with none of the heart, or meaning that the original movie had, making Into Darkness really mediocre at best. Now we have them crashing the Enterprise again in a movie that looks like a Fast and Furious in space. What the hell is wrong with you Paramount? Seriously can we get something worth a damn out of Star Trek any time soon, or are you too busy trying to emulate EA and WB, by shoveling out worse and worse stuff hoping no one notices, but still spends money on it?

I just... Grr. If the new Star Trek TV show is more of this kind of stupid action crap that ignores the entire franchise's philosophical brighter future feel, then Star Trek will be dead to me.

I'm ok with it. I'm a sucker for the new Star Trek, it doesn't replace the old one for me but I like the change of pace and the different interpretation. Plus I don't care so much about the wonky technological problems.

I've a feeling there'll eventually be a return to form for Star Trek and this interlude is a nice change for a little while. I realize more and more that I don't fit into the mold for most people in the geek scene, and I'm fine with that. I guess its because I can enjoy this new thing and not feel like it "ruins" the old for me. I've still the ability to go back and watch the older stuff and enjoy it and I like the new enough to also enjoy it and apparently my brain can separate the two well enough that the issues don't bother me all too much.

Plus I was sold on the Beastie Boys usage in the trailer. I'm such a mark.

What Star Trek move, I don't see a Star Trek movie.

In all seriousness, these people have no business touching the franchise. At this point it's been so butchered they could make it a buddy comedy about Spock and a bunch of Tribbles and it would probably make sense in the universe that has been presented.

simply put its not wrote or aimed at us anymore.

with the chinese market now bigger than the US its where they aim the blockbusters for and frnakly when it comes to them they like their explodey fast action movies which is why the latest transformers results in a definite sequel while something like the new mad max is up in the air despite being a success in the us
