So, I just got back from seeing X-Men in theaters, where I saw this trailer (A week or so old) for the first time.

Besides being a lesson in how different trailer cuts can make all the difference (Even if you didn't like this one, I think we can agree it was better than the first one). And I have three questions:

First, I really like this trailer, and it's actually made me a bit excited for the movie. I liked the first two, purely from an action movie perspective, and I think this one will carry on from that. Are you excited for the movie?

Second, in comparison to the first trailer, has this one changed your opinion on the movie? I know, I know - Trailers can lie, and they should all be taken with a grain of salt. But has this one moved the lever for you at all?

Third, holy shit, is that the Enterprise NX? Fuck me sideways, I loved that thing! This question is a multiparter - Do you like that the first Enterprise (The ship) is making a come back (I really liked the design)? Did anyone else have any positive feelings for the Enterprise series, for all of it's many, many flaws (I actually did like it, though it's a pretty weak series)? And what do you think about it's inclusion? A brave step to include something that could polarize the fan base but may add to the movie, or an arrogant inclusion that's trying to please fans of the show who either wont care, or are so rare that it's stupid to even try?

BORG!! Sorry that was Jeremy Jahns' inner thoughts.

I liked it. Yeah from the trailer it seems like a "rescue mission, villians wants to create something big, yadda yadda".

And in terms of favourite Star Trek Ship? NX is a good ship. What's the one from Voyager called. I did like that one too.

Oh and GO PICTURE!!

Um...eh...maybe?

I dunno. I don't think I'm in a minority in saying I like the new Star Trek films (look at RT, despite what some Trekkies claim), but I'm probably in a minority in saying I like Into Darkness more than '09. But this seems...well...

I just can't connect. It's taking reference from a lot of other sci-fi material (Star Wars, Ender's Game), inserting motorbikes for some unfathomable reason, and the trailer suggests that Earth will be attacked AGAIN. It looks enjoyable enough, but as far as sci-fi films this year go, I'm more interested in "Space Between Us" and "Passengers."

See above.

To answer:

-Yes, it looks like an NX-class to me.

-I do like the NX-class ship design.

-I've seen only the first two seasons of Enterprise. It's not a bad series per se, in the scope of my experience, but I wouldn't call it "good." I'm annoyed by the characters more than anything else, and Archer himself more than anyone.

-The NX-class could be in there for any reason, so I can't speculate on motivation for said inclusion.

Pretty sure that is the Constitution Class ship from the original Star Trek series.

I have only recently started watching Enterprise and it is slow going so far going into season 2. I do like T'pol, Tucker, and Dr. Phlox. I also have a liking of Captain Archer but I am a huge fan of Quantum Leap and I just like Scott Bakula. I would appreciate him being more stern like Picard though instead of doing that... pause thing...like Captain Kirk. "Computer Pause" is a very annoying phrase from him too so far. The man can't seem to be able to do a log without pausing 10 times. But like I said, I like Bakula, he has a light hearted charm.

I know nothing about Star Trek, the reboot is my first experience with the series. I like the characters and the action, and those are literally the only reasons I will be watching this movie.

1. I can't say I am excited, but I am going to watch it.

2. My first opinion was that the movie looks a little generic, and the recent trailer hasn't really made me think different, but as I said, I am watching this purely for the characters and action. So my feelings have changed from "Wow, Trekkies are gonna hate this" to "Huh, Trekkies might not hate this.

3. No clue what you are talking about.

This is the current Constitution.

The Original Constitution (Regular and Refit)

NX Class.

Ship from the trailer.

Kind of a crappy still image, I'm afraid. It shows up at about 2:04 in the trailer at the top of the thread.

Sad Update: Looks like it's not the NX, but the 'USS Franklin.'

Bummer.

EDIT: Also, who decided to put 3.5mm jacks and USB ports on the front of it?

Got to say I'm not a fan of look of the Franklin, would have preferred an NX class visually, but why would such an outdated design still be in use?

Yah... I don't hate the Franklin, but something about it just doesn't seem right. The NX looks far better in my opinion 9Partially because it looks like a 'real' version of the Star Trek concept. Something that someone might actually build. I contend that while the 'necked' Star Fleet design looks good, it doesn't make much sense).

As for why a ship that old would still be in use... well, way back when, Star Trek had a pathetic budget. So when they made new star ship models, they used the absolute shit out of them. This led to many of the later series using ships from the older series, simply to save money. This eventually was inserted into the canon - Star Fleet (And the Klingon Empire) never let a good hull go to waste, and they'll use a space ship until the damn thing falls apart on them. The Constellation class star cruiser, for example, is in active service for around 90 years, and the original Constitution class was operated for over 130 years.

The NX was launched in 2151, and the new Star Trek films happen roughly 100 years later, so it's not beyond reason that the ship would still be around, though admittedly at the end of it's life cycle. Other potential explanations could be that it's a museum ship that's still technically operational (Something that occurs in real life. Most or all of the WWII era Iowas are actually still sea worthy), or that it was 'lost' on the planet (A bit contrived, of course, but I think it would be worth it).

That would make sense in the original time line, but wasn't the entire fleet destroyed in the first movie and the second heavily imply they we're replacing that ship with new, more military deigns (hence the Franklin)?

Although if the entire fleet was destroyed in the first movie, then that would excuse bringing a retired ship back to the front.

Either way, I think the Franklin could do with some more back to it I think.

It is a problem, I guess, but like you say, it could be an easy in for them. The NX class could have been moth balled, but in the wake of the Vulcan incident, everything with a warp core is being pressed back into service.

As for the Franklin, I don't like it's 'pinched' saucer section. And I think (Don't know) that it's actually an older ship, probably an intermediary between the NX and the more modern Constitution. So maybe the logic I'm trying to press onto including the NX actually does apply to the Franklin.

EDIT: Now that I look at it a bit more, yes, it does look a bit stubby without a proper neck.
