Star Trek Economy

Hey, does anybody know how the economy on earth works in star trek? They reference a 'new world economy' that made money itself obsolete, but then how does their economy work now?

Also, how would that translate to a game? (If it's an economy, then you should be able to, right?)

There isn't really an economy. There is no money. But people trade services. Self-improvement is key rather than monetary gain. No one gets paid, because basically everything is provided by replicators.

I think it's basically everything you need is provided for you, so you really only have to do anything extra for things you actually want but aren't essential and easy to get.

the invention of the replicator basically made physical things a silly thing to compete for, and the trip into space and the colonization of other planets made high populations not a problem, so basically everyone has everything they need, and just try to better themselves

I agree with migo that is harder to get you have to work for, but on what scale? For example, what about building houses? Do people just replicate those? Or can people build any structure they want, fairly easily?

One other thing: Land. How do people determine or trade ownership of land if their is no economy?

There is money, just not for the Federation. Humans don't have money, but they use credits, which are assumed to be like fancy IOUs for goods and services. Not so much like Latinum.

They recycle it in replicators. Energy and Matter are the same after all, they just break it down into energy and remake it into something else later. The land goes up to whoever can make the most of it. Bartering does exist you know. Just not money.

Gold-pressed latinum was a thing for other races as a universal currency. But it is a fact that the Federation (or at least Earth) claims that they have no need for money and profits. Likely, they do indeed trade services, favors, aid, technologies, etc. Bit of a utopian barter system.

People do what they want, yes, as long as it falls within laws set down by the cultures in which they live. The extra return is making things better. Have you never wanted to just make something better? If it's good enough you get fame. You don't feel like a worn down moron. The work you do, within the federation, gets you no money -you don't need the money- it's been that way for over 200 years for them. You don't need -anything- as a human living on earth, it is all provided. You either live your life doing nothing and get bored. Or you do something, as is always encouraged by everyone everywhere.

o.o; Sorry if I give off that impression. I'm just curious about what limitations they set down in the lore. If people can do anything of any sort, then there must be incredible works or architecture and art. They just tend to avoid showing much of that, you know?
