Simple question. Star Trek Online. Is it any good?

I've heard bad things and disappointing things about it.. release stages. But I've heard it's improved since then. But all the youtube reviews are release versions.
Yes, I've seen all of TNG and the recent film. So I like Trek.
I also LOVE starships. Seriously. If I got it I'd seriously consider the Collector's just for the concept art, because I almost always don't like that stuff.. but starships? ~Drooool~

So, yeah. It's on amazon for a fiver. Probably a months gameplay too. But I wanna ask the Escapist anyway, how STO is nowadays. What's good, what's bad, etc etc.

I haven't played it since release, but while it was pretty cool in some ways, it was just so very repetitive. I like Star Trek and the games, but I would only occasionally play it if it were free to play.

It's basically all combat, which is normal for an MMO but the problem was so many of the missions were basically the same thing just with different ships/enemies. Obvious copy/pastes of other missions. And PvP was horribly imbalanced. They were SO slow to fix problems too. I don't know how much it has changed since then, however. And they are micro transaction whores.

Combat was pretty fun overall. But they were lazy and didn't make weapon hardpoints for projectile emergence, even though similar combat trek games from years and years before did. For example, the aft torpedo on my Galaxy class didn't shoot from the aft torpedo launcher. It came from where the warp engine would eject from and curved backwards. Lazy. And why did I have like 6000 shields, but 20000 hull? wtf? Once shields were down in the shows, it was a bad situation.

Check it out, you might like it where another doesn't. I highly doubt they've changed that much though.

I love STO. It's gone through a lot of really good changes lately, the combat system's worked on and the mission system is better than it was. PvP is a little more balanced, though the microtransactions remain. I play pretty often and I didn't really have an enormous interest in Star Trek before, but I still got into this game pretty quickly. They have a lot of development to do still, but all in all it's pretty great. I'd definitely recommend it.
