Honestly? I'm intrigued by what Disney's take on the series could do. It could tip either way.

Episode 7? More like "The Fanboys Strike Back Part 2"

The franchise does go past episode 6 but I heard it just gets worse down the line.

Example:
Palpatine comes back as a ghost to possess Leia's unborn baby and this goes on for god know's how long

and
CHEWIE FUCKING DYING
That's all Expanded Universe though, which isn't seen as being properly canon or at-least as canon as the movies themselves (it's complicated with different levels of canon and all). I hear George sees the movies as standing on their own as a canon with the EU stuff as a "parallel universe" based on his own, a view I can emphasise with since the EU is a real mixed bag, ranging from as good as the original films to downright silly plots like the ones you mentioned in the spoilers above. The upshot is though that these new films don't have to pay even a second of attention to what goes on in the novels set after VI, they can do whatever they want (and hopefully write a good plot!)

Episode 7 could actually be good, in the sense that it has no obligation to connect with anything that happened in the previous movies (like the prequels did). They could set it 100 years after episode VI, and make it about Luke's distant grand kids or something. They have a huge amount of freedom to tell whatever story - and it isn't as if Disney lacks good stroy writers.

Plus, it might even distract people enough to stop them whining about the prequel movies.

Or maybe we should just ditch Star Wars. To be honest, it isn't that great a series. It's good and nostalgic, and that is all there is to it. I'm not sure it deserves more movies.

I'm super hyped about this. Seriously has Disney ever put out anything but quality programming. That is to say they have a tonne of money to back their work. Regardless, I'm not sure if Lucas directs episodes of Clone Wars or certain video games, those are my favorite works of the franchise. Basically I just love the Universe itself so what could the harm be in handing the reigns to somebody else.

I don't care that's it's Disney who bought it, this is pretty much what I've always wanted: Star Wars movies not written by George Lucas. I honestly like his direction so it is something of a shame that he won't be taking that role again, but it's worth it for the chance that they might actually have a decent script for once.

And as so many people have already said, thinking of the franchise on a whole can it really get any worse? I doubt it.

But hey what the hell it might be good.
I still kinda think they should let Star Wars just be dead already, though. At this rate no one will ever shut up about it.

Just keep beating that dead horse Lucas, now Disney can give you a hand.
i'm pretty sure Lucas isn't involved in this. It looks like he's sold the whole company and is letting Star Wars go. I'm hopeful for Disney here. May the force be with them...

I wonder how much established "canon" they will accept or ignore. So much expanded universe goes into the immediate timeline afterward they have three options: make it an adaptation of the expanded universe; make how they want in spite of the expanded universe, or sidestep the issue by setting it distantly beyond episode 6.

It's a long wait, and lot remains to be seen, but I have confidence in Disney. They've made good movies targeted at a similar audience recently (Tron: Legacy, John Carter, Pirates 1, 2, and 4, Phase One) so I think it's worth giving them a shot. They already know how steep the price would be for screwing up.

Don't really see how they could make it worse than it already is. Maybe they can actually higher a decent actor for the main character this time. Also, they probably can't make the dialogue much worse than it was in Episode 3.
As far as I'm concerned Obi-Wan was the real main characters of the prequels. Ewan Mcgregor did a great job working with such an awful script.

Meh, I say this is good, Lucas is barely involved in the production other than as a creative consultant. And regardless, to me, any new Star Wars is better than no new Star Wars.

Plus I think it would be quite refreshing to see a completely different Star Wars story in a movie.

His performance actually partially ruined the original trilogy for me. He did such a great job with his role and made Obi-Wan really likable. Knowing that Anakin beats him later on just pisses me off because of how much of a little ***** Hayden Christensen portrayed him to be.

But ya. Ewan Mcgregor was pretty much the only redeeming part of the prequels for me.

Well, after those horrible, uninspired and crap prequels, the fumbly editing and the actual renaming of the first three movies to episodes 4-6 respectively, I doubt much more damage can be done to the IP.

Besides, while I have pretty much given up on the Star Wars IP as is, as the current 'other' gems in the bucket are basically all based on the giddily colourful My Little Princess and My Angry Anakin prequel nonsense, there is a slight chance that more inspired folks at Disney can actually handle the property with the respect and care it deserves. Having Lucas as a "creative consultant" still bears significant risks, but what the hell. Disney couldn't possibly wreck it any more... can they?

OT: Don't really care. Star Wars is ruined. But I guess they have nowhere to go but up, so there's that at least.

I'd think it's too early to say for certain. It's certainly possible that Disney will turn things around and make a new great Star Wars series but given what's already happened and Star Wars' place in the pop culture, it isn't likely. Not impossible mind you, but it would be very difficult.

I feel a disturbance in the force

(couldn't help it, I'm sorry)

Well I hope they make some good star wars movies. If not... Well in my version of the world I get to ignore certain things. So if they suck, to me they never existed.

Agreed. This can not end very well. If anything, this will be the final nail in the Star Wars coffin.

I'm more worried about what the fanboys are gonna do more so then Disney, it's easy to ignore a bad movie, an entire internet of whining is a bit harder to ignore.
