Windows Vista? Give yourself admin rights, or do it as administrator.
Lol, Thats the thing I am adminstator.. And i'm using windows 7 not vista.. Vista is evil
Check your UAC Restrictions.

Unless it's not popping up asking if you want to do that or not, in which case you solved that problem. I'd check it just to be safe.

Did it play a video when it did? Cause if so you should disable the movies, they don't work on the PC for the damnedest reasons.

Sorry to butt in, but KotOR 1 and 2 are really problematic on Windows 7. I've got them both as well and they simply refuse to work.

KotOR has been infuriating me since I got my new computer, I got it to install when I first put the disc in but it was crashing non-stop so naturally I uninstalled it. After looking up solutions on various help forums I tried to re-install, but every time I try to, it comes up with "Are you sure you want to uninstall?". I went into "add and remove programs" (Where it is still present but taking up no memory or space whatsoever) with no luck, then went into registry editor to delete the files left on my computer manually. The funny thing is, once I've deleted the files in the registry editor (Bioware Corp/Lucasarts etc) , they come back about 10 minutes later. Also, during those 10 minutes the "Are you sure you want to uninstall?" prompt still comes up.

KotOR 2 is another thing entirely, I try to install it, disc 1 works perfectly but as soon as I put in disc 2, it stops and after a few minutes gives me an error message with "Cyclic Redundancy Check"... it may be a faulty disk? There's no scratches or anything on it.

I passed the Hardware Scan from the main menu when I had installed KotOR so that's not the problem (I have a relatively new computer that can play Oblivion on the highest settings). I've also checked for the latest graphics card drivers and they're downloaded so that can't be it either.

It's really starting to annoy me now. They're my favourite games.

So it wasn't the movie then... you disabled the buffer...

That's what got it working for me. Are you sure you spelt it exactly right? Just want to make sure.

DisableVertexBufferObjects=1

Otherwise you may want to run the compatibility mode to Windows 2000. That reportedly worked for someone.

The first problem may actually be the SecuROM coming back to bite you in the arse. That's the only way I can explain it coming back ten minutes later.

As for the second, I found a guy who had the same problem with the same disk and found a solution.

cogadh said:
This happens with my second disk all the time. All I had to do to get around it was copy the contents of the disk to a directory on my hard drive and when the install asks for the disk, I point it at that directory. I don't know if it really makes a difference, but I did name the directory the same as the label on the disk.

BTW - CRC errors don't always mean a bad disk, sometimes they can be an indication of a bad CD/DVD drive or its connecting cable. If you have had any disk read errors with any other disks, then that is a very likely suspect for the cause of this particular error. Unfortunately, the only way to fix a bad drive or cable is by replacing it.

Ok, Game work's quite fine now.. Just a problem with the saves.. they wont load :/ And SecurROM is something that is pretty much welded into your computer when it's installed unforutnatly

Ok thanks, I'll try that for the second disk.
Any suggestions about what I can do with the SecuROM? The first time I saw it come back was comical, the second time not so.
I can't confirm whether or not it is the SecuROM, just sounds like it to me. The best you can do is either fully uninstall it or update it so that it isn't as much of a pain anymore.

It sounds like you're going to reinstall it anyways with Knights of the Old Republic if you do fully uninstall it. So you can try to update it or fully uninstall it and get a newer version installed. The SecuROM in mine hasn't given me much trouble, then again I have a digital version from Steam... so I can't imagine it could due to how Steam works. Or it could be that my newer version from Crysis overrides the one found in Knights of the Old Republic.

I'd google for workarounds around it if updating doesn't work, there seems to be a lot of solutions, but none that I can cross match and confirm that work.

I have no idea why that isn't working... but it sounds like your saves are corrupted. I found one solution, but I don't know if it works. I'll link you to the tool he mentions and give you the description.

I have the same problem, what happens is it probably never created an .IFO file when it created the .SAV file, the IFO seems to be important for loading the save, for more information look on bioware's website, as IFO and SAV are both 2 of bioware's GFF (GenericFileFormat).

when this happens i usually use a GFF editor and take the pifo.IFO file from my autosave, and then save as pifo.IFO(don't change anything, just save it as a new file) in the the folder of the save that won't work
ussually C:/Program Files/LucasArts/SWKOTOR (or SWKOTOR2)/saves/000002 - Game1(or whatever number your broken save is)
Source(s):
trial and error
and the GFF editor can be found here:

I found a thread that may have the solution.

http://www.quartertothree.com/game-talk/showthread.php?t=7354

Vegas, I fixed my problem: while the saves weren't corrupted, my "gamesinprogress" folder was. Deleting that fixed the issue.
Ok, tried playing before I read this and got the "Loading" lock up again.

As for the gameinprogress folder, do I need to delete the entire folder or just the files inside?
You can remove the entire folder. Get rid of currentgame and temp too if they exist.

They should not be there if you are not currently running KotOR.

Glad to be of service.

Also, I didn't notice that this got posted. I knew I should have bookmarked this... but so long as everything is working for you that's good. Here's hoping it continues working for you.
