So I was at work today and I got to thinking about the terribly mishandled (IMHO) Star Trek reboot series and wondered, while I'm not terribly fond of reboots as a concept, would it be a good idea to reboot the Star Wars franchise? And I'm not just talking about the prequels or the original 3, I'm talking EVERYTHING. Possibly this time actually starting from Episode 1 and going till 6 instead of starting at 4 and then going back to 1 later. I also thought it'd be a good idea to do all this before finishing Episode 7, 8, 9 so that they could then add those on to the rebooted series instead for consistency of actors and what not, but I suppose it's a little late for that.
Anyway, what are your thoughts on this? Good idea? Bad idea? No idea?

I'll let you know in a few years once Episodes VII-however many they're making come out

Star Trek had gotten quite blotted with so many various series that that it was easier to just start it up again fresh to allow everyone to be on an even playing field. I don't believe Star Wars has hit that point (yet). If the new stuff getting squirted out of Hollywood turns out to be garbage or if they over-saturate the market with mediocrity, then it might be time to put a bullet into the series and start a brand new batch.

Who would watch that?
I'd rather see some new content instead of all these endless rehashes and reboots that are somehow popular at the time.

Instead of a reboot, give me expanded universe material. They could probably give Thrawn a couple of movies, a bunch with the new legacy stuff, hell, I really want to see some Republic Commando movies, something based off Karen Traviss' work. Hard Contact, Triple Zero, True Colors, Order 66 and 501st had some of the most engaging characters I've seen in the EU.

Nooooooooooooooooooooo!

Ahem.
No, because the original trilogy is really good. Maybe the prequels...yes I would be fine with the prequels being remade with a competent script. Cut out Jar Jar, make less whiny lines for Anakin and you are golden. Ok not golden but you are making progress.

I would love to see expanded universe stuff, like with Thrawn. I think they should focus a movie on Boba Fett, because he is Boba fucking Fett. And something with Darth Maul...Oh god, I am still rattled from that movie, there is no way he could lose there, ESPECIALLY when they pull that again in ep3 but Anakin(rightfully) loses.

I think there's just too much stuff in the universe to start all over. I don't think it's an awful idea, but I could see it being much worse than really adding anything to the franchise in general. I would rather not have the original trilogy tossed aside and retold, it would feel wrong to me.

I think Star Wars is a lot like WH-40k. It's just so massive that you don't need to stay in just one section of it. Don't like the movies, go read some of the books.

I would like more movies for the Star Wars Universe, such as the time period between episodes 3 and 4, some prequels of the prequels, more of the time frame of the Kotor/Tor series, maybe even make Kotor 1-2 into a movie series, im against a reboot not because i would think they would be bad (they might) or changing things (they might) but it is such a massive universe for star wars, so many books, games, comics, so many time periods need to be explored instead of focusing on the one period.

TL;DR:

More movies yes, reboot no.

Since it's apparently unavoidable i just hope it will be as bad as possible; maybe then this franchise can be laid to rest instead of having its corpse paraded around.
Star Wars is now nothing more then a save haven for lazy writers. Now matter how bad you are at writing, someone will apparently still buy that stuff.
Same thing with star trek. First Abrams movie threw logic away because writing needed to happen fast. And so everything has to do what the plot needs it to do. Also: Lens flares.

Both franchises are now consisting of flashy images and stupid plots. No use in wasting time crafting a good story; some People will still watch it even if the last good thing that came out of those husks of franchises is over two decades old.

I dunno. I don't care. They're so far away from the original movies at this point, I don't care whether they keep piling sequels or start piling remakes. They're just piling steaks of dead horse meat to me.

There's two problems with rebooting Star Wars.

The first is the same one Star Trek ran into - People are invested in the Universe. Probably more so than Star Trek. When you have that sort of investment, your core fan base (The 'Guaranteed Money') is going to get pissed. Star Trek managed this because its fan base, even if they didn't like the fact basically everything they've liked before is basically gone forever, they're used to having more then one story (5 different 'cast', as opposed to Star Wars 1.5 cast). In Star Wars, you basically have the core group, and spin offs in books (That aren't really canon anyway).

The second problem, in my opinion, is that Star Wars (The Movies) is an absolute mess held together only by some fantastic actors (Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill, etc) and spectacular effects that are no longer so special.

The second one is kind of opinionated, I suppose.
