So, I've watched the trailer for the new MMORPG made by the exceptional Bioware development team, and I have to admit, The Old Republic could be really good - if it weren't for the standard MMORPG users that will assuredly play the game. I mean nothing could ruin a great Star Wars video game experience more than having a fellow Jedi respond to you saying "May the Force be with you." with "I don't need the Force, dude, I got l33t skills, dawg."

Now, maybe I'm just way too nerdy when it comes to my RPGs. I've never played any tabletop games, but I sure as hell played NWN persistant worlds. And I LOVE my single player experiences better than anything else. Frankly, Bioware is a great game developer, probably my favorite, but I won't buy this game becasue it is going to totally betray the awesomeness that was Knights of the Old Republic.

So, basically, I'm curious if I am the only one who is pissed off that the next installment in the best Star Wars game series - and probably one of the best RPG series of the last decade - is a friggin MMO. I absolutely hate that stupid sort of consumer culture.

There, there. Don't be too quick to judge it. It might turn out just fine. With a little luck all the unwanted people will be too busy playing WoW.

If I can expect it to be anything like the persistent worlds of NWN I shouldnt have to worry much about powergamers and lolboys. But I probably have to.

If they do it right, maybe we can finally topple the monstrosity that is World of Warcraft.

I feel like there is no way they can guarantee it's like the persistant worlds of NWN...but I'm with you, if it was like those, I'd be game to lose my life to the Old Republic

Dude, haven't you seen Empire Strikes Back? The scene were Luke fights Darth on Dagoba? Remember how that turned out? If you kill WoW, you will BECOME WoW.

Idiots are abundantin every MMO, I don't see why ToR is going to be any different.
As much as I want it too be, sadly it just isn't going to happen.

What type of person uses the words "l33t" and "dawg" AND plays a MMO?
--Honest Question--

On the other hand, I must admit, the community might not be as good as we hope. Galaxies (Yes, I actually played Galaxies) had a really friendly community for some reason.

The trailer makes me look forward to this and it also makes me a bit dissappointed that its an MMO. Those 2mins are better than the 3 prequel films put together; i actually felt for the character that bites it in the end. It looks really good but as an MMO i dont know, can you ever avoid the 'tards you hate so much? In anything online you find them. L4D has players that shotgun everyone in the safe room etc.

Why does anything need to topple WoW?

They have said that you can play it as a single player game if you want to. Turn off the chat, dont display other players names etc. Personally I'm looking forward to another Star Wars MMO, I cant wait.

This is the kind of ambition and expectation that has ruined many a recent MMO release. I don't agree that this is the kind of expectation players should have.

A game should be goo don its own merits and create and audience based around them. If it exceeds World of Warcraft, great, but to make an attempt to exceed it while compromising core game design is poor. I hope Bioware realizes and understands that they should stick to their core design vision and not worry about the MMO subscriber wars.

In my opinion, having played it extensively and left, World of Warcraft is the McDonald's of MMOs - it serves millions and millions, but it's fast, low-quality food that is convenient. In that respect, because of WoW's willingness to cater to the lowest common denominator for the greatest amount of subs, you'll never beat it unless you're willing to do the same. At that point, you're just an imitator.

I won't be able to play it as I don't have a computer powerful enough to run it. I am disappointed that they went to the MMO community but hey, if they think they'll make more money that way and revolutionize the MMO game style then good for them...

First, stop being so overcritical, especially of a game that won't be out probably until next year or possibly later.

Second (and good news here) not only did BioWare announce that story will be an incredibly huge focus for them (believeable, since the entire game will be voice acted) they also said that most of the game can be played solo. There are certain goals that can only be achieved with some help, but with luck and if they create the general enviroment of the game correctly, you won't get to many "1337 hax0rz" guys.

Give it a shot before you get all pissed, man. It's BioWare. Even if it isn't as good as KotoR 1+2, it'll still be good.
