Are there any other people here who haven't seen the original trilogy?
I have only seen Phantom Menace and parts of the other two of the prequel trilogy.
Is it that good?
Does it still hold up today?

The first movie is a brisk, exciting affair that indeed still holds up as an entertaining space adventure. The second is everything a sequel should be in that it gives you more of what you loved in the first and it does it better. The third, meh, watch it to finish off the series. It's fun but it's kind of a letdown after the second. It does have some classic moments and you owe it to yourself to figure out what the hell people are talking about and referring to when they say "It's a trap!" You will probably have more fun watching the original trilogy than the prequel trilogy as prequels are horribly uneven in terms of quality from scene to scene.

I also, to my eternal shame, have never seen star wars. Its a bit of a gaping black hole in my nerd persona, but its so ubiquitous in general society/culture that it seems like I know everything that happens in it anyway, so I'm not really motivated to watch it.

After all, if I did, I wouldn't get to see my friends faces when I tell them I've never seen it.

There are loads of 'classics' I've never seen. I have a 'to watch' list longer than anyone has time for. I need persuading that Star Wars justifies being bumped up the list, ahead of for example; Classic Doctor Who, Battlestar Gallactica or Terminator.

Nonsense. The prequels are perfectly even. They're utter rubbish from start to finish.

The fights at the end of the first and third were enjoyable at least. I pictured you saying this as a sir and laughed out loud.

You know, I enjoyed the fight at the end of the first film the first time I saw it, but upon further viewings it's become more and more ridiculous, most particularly the terrible staging of both Qui-Gon and Maul's deaths, with long awkward hesitations before the killing strokes. Whether or not George Lucas ever had much talent as a director is subject to debate, but the prequel trilogy is Ed Wood bad. There are scenes and lines of dialogue so terrible that they need to be seen to be believed.

I realize that these are silly space operas and we needn't hold them to the same standards we would Oscar contenders, but my god. Phantom Menace makes Transformers look like Citizen Kane.

Oh I agree, the dialogue... /shiver the dialogue was... I don't even know how to describe it. When a majority of the audience audibly groans and laughs at a dialogue exchange between what are supposed to be the romantic leads, then there is something so far beyond wrong that you have to wonder how it got put to film and then released. But let's not turn this into a prequel hate thread or we'll be here all weekend.

A lot actually. Take it from a 17 year old, the original movies are some of the best movies I've ever seen.

I'd say yes but having seen it as a kid. They're also one of the few movies where I would say the special effects, while obviously dated, still actually kind of hold up (Jurassic Park being another), but I will forever be tainted by nostalgia. If you watch it now though, especially after the prequels, you have the plus of not being horribly traumatized by what happens in Empire.

I prefer the originals but not just for nostalgia reasons. The scripting, acting and characters are a lot more interesting.

Some, well, most of the acting in the prequels is so wooden it made Captain Scarlet jealous.

And the dialogue, oh good god the dialogue.

"My power has doubled since we last met" said Anakin after checking his Force'o'meter.

The Luke, Leia and Han Solo triangle was interesting and quite well written .... the Anakin and Padme stuff looks like it came in a free script from a Coco Pops packet.

Based on all these recommendations, I saw Episode 4 yesterday and I have to say it was good.
But the only thing unique about it today is that it was the first to attempt all of this.
If it was made today I would not have liked it much. In 1977, I would have loved it.
I liked it more for what it lead to than for its own story.

I have seen all of them, and yes the original trilogy is that good, and yes it does still hold up today. Watch them and enjoy good sir! In my opinion the prequels weren't all that bad, some of the CGI looks ugly as hell though.
