Counter Strike saw a huge split upon the release of Source -> a lot of gamers switched to the newer version, while may purists stuck with 1.6 (I personally can't stand CS:S).

What will happen with an even more competitive e-sport, Starcraft? Will we see a similar split? Will more people be playing 1 or 2 (I think more people still play CS 1.6 than Source)?

I'll personally be switching, provided it's good, and I don't see any reason why it won't be.

I doubt the majority of the community will have problems with the shift.

However the "pro" players will most likely resent it. In my experience, pro gamers whine about the slightest change in a games formula.

I love comparing games that don't exist with ones that do!

Starcraft 1 can be run on bottom of the line PCs, so that'll still be played in offices and schools around the world forever, likely.

Then again, I hate Starcraft. And every RTS, really.

How often do people have to tell that its just a game with two expansions now.
They jsut said they thought about splitting it, but decided to go the traditional route.

Wasn't thinking of that, but the online, to my knowledge, is the same on all three -> it's just different campaigns that you get.

I think pro Starcraft players will *have* to switch -> these guys get paid 9-5 salaries, so they should really do as they're told, and, as Starcraft is televised, all the money will be in the prettier sequel.

I will still play Starcraft 1 and can't wait for 2 to be released. Just as I can't wait for Diablo 3.....

I'll definitely play Starcraft 2.
From the looks of it, it'll mostly be more of the same. Not that that's bad, considering how great SC 1 was.

Exactly. The chances of my shitty PC running Diablo 3 or SC2 are slim to none.

believe it or not, most people upgrade their computers more often than once every 10 years.

I would have to say Starcraft 2, just because the units will have new abilities.

I say as long as I get to keep going in the story without the game cheaping out and not giving me credit for winning, I'll go to SC2.

As long as it comes out in the next year or so.. I know Blizzard is one of those companies that like to take their time with a game, Diablo, Starcraft ect. But there is a point I'd like to make that nobody seems to have brought up yet;

If you don't expect the game will be coming out in the next century or so, DON'T ANNOUNCE IT YET. That just teases the audience and makes them sad because they don't get a release date for years. Valve could learn from this too..

Upgrade it? My dad just bought a family computer. Upgrading is for people who know what they're doing. I don't actually know the specs, but D2 doesn't look as pretty as the inside of the box cover.

The official announcment was only about two years ago. You are refering to fan speculation.

I doubt the pro-gaming SC scene will rush to Starcraft 2, every RTS game only starts to achieve real balance after a year of patching so it makes no sense for competitive gamers to rush away from a perfectly balanced RTS to one that is only in its infancy just because they are similar. In time, SC2 might take over provided it's up to the standard of SC1, but it will probably take years to happen.

Pretty much this. RTS' are notoriously IMBA when they come out and don't tend to achieve any semblance of balance until about a year or so of patching.

Peak Players for Counter-strike Source: 92,551

Nope.

Except if you count the pirated versions, where it's not the game that's better, but the ease of piracy.

Crazy Koren experts will stick with the classic. A lot people will switch over. There will still be a die-hard base of starcraft players for years. Depending on how the new game feels, it may develop an equally rabid base of largely Koren players who play it as if it's god gift to Earth. I can see people playing both for some time before deciding on one or the other with a lot using the new game and only same parts using only the old or both games.
