Well, i have been playing SC 2 for a fair while now and have started to become better and better. Eventually i reached the top of my legue, i have been at the top of my legue for about 2 weeks now and i find myself wondering when the hell the game is going to move me up? Im constantly winning games against people in legues above me with occasional loses. Im not trying to say that im "Da best player EVAR!" im far from it, i would just like a bit more of a challenge and was wondering how the leveling system in the game actually works.

My understanding is that to get to the highest rankings you've got to have an average APM over a certain number + a solid record, but then I'm just a gold rank sod so beyond that I've no clue!

From what I understand, you need to just keep wining and give it some time. League-transitions are done at night.

Seems you might need to get more wins against the people in the league above you.

Seriously? thats pretty stupid if thats the case, ive seen some pros with APM's of only about 70-80

That's not the case, don't worry.

Promotions depend on your win/lose ratio, that is all. It doesn't care about your APM, how long or close the games were, how well you played, none of that matters. Only thing that counts is if you won or not. The only other thing that might factor in is your ladder score, though I think that counts more towards determining who you'll be matched up against.

Having said that, nobody is really sure how and when the promotions/demotions actually happen. There are people in silver, with 2k+ points who consistently win against platinums and diamonds and still don't get promoted. Then there are people who get promoted after losing 3 games in a row.

Basically, just play, win and don't worry about your league too much.

I would be very surprised that APM is a factor. Consistent win-rate over time against people above you would make a lot more sense.

I was top of my Gold League in solo for quite some time, then I had a poor streak (against higher tier opponents that weren?t just cheesing), which put me down.

Also, I have been ranked up in other leagues when not in the top position, currently Platinum in 2v2. It is all to do with consistent win rate. If you stay in the top part of the league and win enough games, something like a percentage probably around 70%, then you might league up.

If I wasn?t about to log off I would go check the SC2 forums for you, I am sure there is a thread or two around there discussing the ranking up system, check them out. The official forums are very active in both US and Europe.
