So, the nerve cord khala thing that the Protoss have? How long has that actually been a canon aspect of their race? I never played Starcraft 1, so I'm just going off information from Wings of Liberty and forward, but I thought that was just a really long ponytail. Not some kind of nerve cluster like from the Avatar movie. The reason I'm asking is I'm mostly just curious if this was established before that movie came out or not. Not really worried if they did rip off James Cameron with this idea, or vice versa, just curios, since I know the original Starcraft game was around long before that movie, but I don't know if the nerve cord/khala thing was you know...a thing that far back.

If memory serves, they did mention severing their nerve cords during the Protoss Campaign in Brood War, but I'm not 100% sure.

It's been in there since the first SC.

Dark Templar rejected the unity of the Khala, and to do so they cut their cords and turned to the dark cold of the universe. That was explained in the first SC missions with Zeratul.

So, yeah, been there as lore since the 1st game. :)

Actually while it is true the first game mentions something along the lines of "Dark Templar rejected the unity of the Khala" I'm pretty sure they never mentioned the cords.

I played through SC for the first time last month and the only reason I know the cords are a thing is because I read the StarCraft: Frontline graphic novels beforehand.

And were those graphic novels published before Avatar the movie?

It's been there since the beginning. Blizzard put a lot of lore in their manuals back in the day, and the lore of the Protoss includes the origins of the Dark Templar, their exile from Aiur and how "to show their disdain for the Conclave and their Judicator lackeys, the Dark Templar ceremoniously cut off their nerve-appendages, effectively severing themselves from the basic communal link that all Protoss share" (page 75 of the manual).

Originally published a year before Avatar.

That explains why I didn't see it. My copy of the game did not come with the manual.

I guess I was wrong. My bad.
