Starforge - The next Minecraft?

Dafuq did I just watch? That is possibly the coolest looking game for a long time now. Lo-o-ong time. And I like it a lot. I'll definitely keep my eye on how it develops.

Except it's free to play, and actually you can download the current build from a link below the trailer on youtube, but it's a previous build from the one in the trailer I think, as that one is still on testing, but anyway you can try out the beta/alfa/unfinished? version now if you want to, point is that they said it's going to be free to play so you don't have to pay them to try it, I have no idea what they are going to sell though.

You can also download it from their site [http://www.starforge.com/], but I don't know if it's working away, I think their servers died or something, maybe it's back up IDK.

Eeuuuuggghh... Did anyone else find that disorientating? I haven't felt that way since Mirror's Edge. It looks great and has some very nice ideas, doubt I'll be able to run it though so I'll have to give it a miss unless I get a better PC.

Sorry, I didn't make it clear - I will download and play it, but I will also keep close watch on the development. However, I understand it's free because it's in beta now, I would assume that once the release version rolls around, they would have paid content - whether it's the whole game or parts of it or maybe something else, it is a fair guess that they'll want a revenue of money. And I will happily oblige. I think these guys deserve support.

This looks really cool, and I think I'll probably give it a run after I get my new PC (as my old one can barely run Minecraft at any appreciable FPS as it is).

I'm interested in what the gunplay is going to turn into in the long run...

Alpha lol. I tried it out and its certainly fun. Its fairly limited and buggy as hell. The movement system is...odd, but I can see myself getting used to it. Once it has vehciles and space...ya Im going to love it.

Considering all the things they are combining, as well as how great that video looks, this could potentially be my next "hey, the servers are down for maintenance, and I don't feel like going to sleep yet, so I'll play something else for a while".

Eh, I can understand the appeal however it does seem very mediocre. From the looks of things, it isn't going to be the "next minecraft" in terms of gameplay due to it's emphasis on the action.

Yeah, there's no way this is as good as it looks.

That's why there's a free alpha, because no one would believe it otherwise.

This would be alpha in my view. The game obviously ins't finished on the art front, beta is bug testing changing damage on weapons etc. I do like their tech though, if the could ship that to Unreal or CryEngine like you said then hopefully the can put some more focus into the game and not having to make a good engine. I would like those assets cleaned up Then it would be a purchase for me if they were selling it. As for the next Minecraft i don't think so. It is like Terraria is and was not the next Minecraft, it and this appear more 'game' focused while Minecraft is much more on making cool things, there isn't much of a game to it.

Saying that this is the "new" Minecraft is like saying that Mass Effect is the "new" Dragon Age.

Yeah, there are similar underlying elements, but the focus and style is drastically different.

Face it people, awesome games can co-exists without one of them needing to be the end-all be-all of gaming.


As for this game, we'll see how it develops. Although I'm not too fond of the use of copyrighted models for the demo videos (Player is that mercenary Leia was disguised as in Return of the Jedi, and the trench scene had it's fair share of Hydralisks), even as placeholders.

Oh look, this thread's been bumped. Well, I guess I'll give my experience:

It's pretty damn awkward. The basic mechanics of digging and building just don't seem to work right, and you end up overdigging or overbuilding, or in the wrong place more often than not. Needs way more work.

I tried and loved it. The movement is somewhat shoddy, but has great promise. Seen only two kinds of enemies, but they are pretty fun ones. Loved the planetside and the graphics, I really can't wait to see how its gonna change in a couple months!

Have they released a new build lately? I tried it when it first came out and the graphics were completely borked for me. All purple and green everywhere.
