After weeks of speculation, Syfy just announced that it won't renew Stargate Universe for a third season, putting an end (for now) to the long-running Stargate franchise on the network. The upcoming 10 episodes of Stargate Universe's second season, which will air in the Spring, will be the series' last. The news follows the recent cancellation of another franchise Syfy series, the Battlestar Galactica prequel Caprica. The Stargate franchise -- consisting of Stargate SG-1, Stargate Atlantis and Stargate Universe -- has aired on Syfy since 2002. Syfy's slate of returning series includes Warehouse 13, Eureka and Haven, which will be joined next year by new series Being Human, which launches on January 17, the recently greenlit series Alphas as well the Battlestar Galactica prequel movie/backdoor pilot Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome.
Nooooo!!!!!! I for one am dismayed by this. One of the best written tv series for a long time. Damn tv exec's :(
At first I was sad but then I relaised that with their whole mission to explain creation was getting a bit ahead of themselves. In Stargate they always let the ancients ascension be enough explanation and they never broached a topic we today cannot begin to even explain and thus they avoided what would have been a very awkward finale. The start of the series with Rush Vs Young was the highlight for me because you did get the sense that they were totally willing to kill each other.

Huh, best news I've had all week. I watched one episode of this show and it was horrible. It was as boring if not more than any episode of Battlestar Galactica. I can't remember where I read it but someone referred to it as BattleStargate Galactica at one point which I found accurate and funny.

Not a huge fan, it was OK, nothing special.

But any scripted TV lost at the moment is a bad thing.

This really bummed me out when I heard about it. It definately started out shaky, but it really came into its own, and I was really getting intriuged about where they were going with it. But, as with every other show I bother to watch now days, its over.

Thing is, Battlestar Galactica does good space-drama with characters that are actually properly fleshed out and grow during the series. While SG:U was becoming less crappy, it still was a lot worse on those fronts than BSG while a drama series needs those things to stay interesting.

Plus in BSG the drama made more sense and they still left time for more upbeat moments and episodes. SGU however was just stuffed full with extra drama to make it seem more edgy, from the moment on it was doom and gloom and that barely ever really changed. Most glaring example was the senator sacrificing himself for everyone else, we didn't even know the guy (that was, what, 30 mins into the pilot?) and they made this huge important event out of it. How are we supposed to care about this?

BSG thankfully avoided that and more pitfalls SGU did fell into. Doesn't make the comparison with BSG any less accurate of course, it was rather obvious from the moment they started saying "FTL" and the way outdoor sections were shot.

They cancelled SGA just for SGU. I loved Atlantis it was great and should atleast have had another season before moving on to the next.

SGU is pretty bad so I dont mind it being cancelled. I just hope there will be quality Stargate in the future.

Read it on Reddit last week. Speculation: if SG1 got 10 seasons, Atlantis got 5 and Universe got 2, I would predict that the next Stargate spin-off would only get one season, while the fifth spin-off would get cancelled mid-season.

Wish Fox would let go of the rights to Firefly. Syfy maybe would and definitely should gobble it up should that ever (unlikely) come to pass.

For the benefit of all, of course.

Yes, it's amazing how they conveyed Rush and Young's willingness to kill each other by having them try to kill each other on several occasions. ;)

I'll miss the show, as I saw it as Eli's quest to get laid despite constantly having to save everyone and foil Rush's attempts at seizing control of the ship. The writers and producers of the show obviously agree with my view on this because once Eli got his end away, they realised they'd messed up and killed the woman off.

I shall also miss Lt James in a tight t-shirt. I am, after all, human.

*sigh* Highly annoying; I preferred the other series, certainly, but it was new SG content, without the higdeously long wait for another film.

im actually glad, its spinoffs like this that ruin the franchise i think they should stop right now and leave it be a great memory.

No big loss, compared to Atlantis and SG1, Universe was shit.

Seriously, from the word go the only character I ever liked was Rush, and from the start it always seemed like you were never supposed to like him.
Every other character was just a bland, stock, generic cliché and I'm honestly glad they're done with the series, it was just...So mediocre when it could have been so much more.

I just don't want the people who made it to think: "Hmmm... paying writers, hiring actors, building sets...hard work and they don't like it anyway. Let's just point a camera at some ignorant talentless fucking fuckwit...its cheap..they'll watch it because there is nothing else on."

Dancing with the Fuckwits
Fuckwit Idol
Ghostfuckwits
Fuckwit Shore (or should that be Jersey Fuckwit?)
16 and a Fuckwit

I've got a hundred of those..someone make me stop....

Whatever SG:U was, at least it was better than all that stupid shit.

These days? Wait for a show to play and end naturally, buy the DVD/pay for VOD. It wouldn't be so bad over here in the UK, but we have a fucking telly tax.

I'm not surprised. SG1 was a masterpiece, SGA was great and SGU was utter crap. SGU ruined Stargate's wonderful legacy. I could never believe how they could screw it up so much, and am not surprised Syfy finally realised their mistake.
