I like to think of myself as a well-rounded movie goer who has seen his share in many different genres. I also like to think that I know what decent acting looks like and I think I have an eye for cinematography. That being said (not to act concieted but rather to tell you my position in filmaking) what do you think of the movie:

STARSHIP TROOPERS?
(The first one naturally).

I think Starship Troopers is a fantastic movie in the acting, directing, animation, cinematographing, and general storyline and besides all that it is just a fantastic movie.

As Yahtzee would say... "A glorius celebration of boyish fantasy violence".

What do you think of my favorite movie?

Also, bonus question has anyone read the book? I think it is also amazing.

I like that movie, one of my favorite sci-fi ones. Although with sci-fi movies I have annoyingly few options. Book's good too, I thought it was strange how it explained human doctrines and history so well and in-depth while telling little more than the existence, appearance, and military tactics about the aliens. But that was the soldiers point of view.

The movie was good if you don't think about it too much (How the fuck did the bugs manage to hit the earth with an asteroid from across the galaxy?). But if you want an entertaining gore fest, accept no substitutes.

Wat was wrong with the second one?
The first was great but i didn't think the second was all that bad either. I liked the idea (Ice station trying to survive against the bugs).
It was a low budget B grade action movie.
Wasn't that bad... Was it?

I just watched this film tonight and I have to say I was surprised at how well it holds up. I remember being kind of turned off by the cartoonish effects and props in the film when I saw it in the theater. I suppose I wanted to be able to take it seriously when it came out and was disappointed that it didn't take itself seriously, but in retrospect it's exactly those elements that save the film.

The book was also great, but a completely different experience. I don't really think of them as being related.

On a related note, what the hell happened to Casper Van Diem?

I thought that the book was certainly excessive in its use of violence and nudity. It was crass and shallow, although that is part of its charm. I much prefer the film. It is a thoughtful look at the psyche and development of a soldier with some exciting bits, while never straying too far into the realm of hollow, soulless action.

As for what Casper Van Diem, I think he went on to star in a Tarzan movie, then fall off the face of the movie landscape into realm of Direct to Video Hell.

I've never seen the movie, but the book was excellent. It really has very little action, concentrating instead on the philosophy involved, and that is different enough to be intriguing.

You all have to agree that the animation in the film is amazing on all levels and is used responsibly unlike other movies that put pointless animation into every scene (you know who you are!).

I think the movie's good. I guess most of the criticism comes from people who take it too seriously.

Grrrrrr......temper rising......

It's shit.

Now, I'm sorry that I've just angered a lot of people, so let me give my reasons.

1) Acting: Atrocious. The only two people who actually act are killed off and the bugs are less wooden.
2) Weaponary : Atrocious. Machine guns and nukes. DID ANYONE HEAR OF FLAMES???? THEY ARE INSECTS? OR BUG SPRAY?
3) Science : Atrocious. For a number of reasons, but mostly that if the Human race was that thick they wouldn't have got out of caves.
4) Fight Scenes : Atrocious. Splatter/Splatter/Gore/Gore.
5) Heroes : Atrocious. Halfway through the film I was cheering for the Aliens.
6) Doogie Howser : Space Nazi.
7) Believability : Atrocious "We think the bugs are intelligent." WHY, BECAUSE THEY THREW A ROCK AT YOU FROM THE OTHER SIDE OF THE GALAXY?
8) Message : Atrocious. The Book was a PARODY of war. The film glorified it. Way to completely miss the message guys.
9) Symbolism : Atrocious : The Brain Bug...there's no phallic representation there is there. Especially when they stick the gun in it's...
10) People telling me to shut up when I cheered at the best bit of the film.

Favourite Bit of the whole film. Carmen (Denise Richards) getting stabbed through the leg.

Book : Good. Animation Series : Good. Game : Good. Film : Bollocks.

The book satisfied my love of RA Heinlein's philosophical writings and the movie satisfied my childish love of violence and space bugs. What's not to love?

Some forms of entertainment I can just enjoy at face value, in this case, even though I read the book, I found the movie to be entertaining, which is all I really require of entertainment.

How many here have seen the latest addition to that movie franchise? The main character/actor from the first is back and I don't want to completely spoil it, but those who like an advancement of tech and the global gov ideas will certainly find it interesting.

I know I had fun with all three movies, definitely not something one should try to take seriously, though interesting enough there are some undertones to the stuff that reminds me of stuff like the Robocop series.

I for one did not se it as an mindless action movie, I saw it as a satire on the world(it fits especially good now with all the 9/11 stuff still flying around)... Sure its not a *wink wink* kind of satire but more subtle so that if you wish you can still see it as mindless action...
I like the propaganda show(AKA news) and how nobody ask any questions...

As for the second movie, the only good thing about it is that you get to see BOOBIES!!! other then that its a movie that basicly didnt understand anything about the first one and just made it into a horror movie instead...

So my point is: its a great movie that you can watch as mindless action or as a great satire.

but the film glorified war through the conventions of pop culture. hence the melodramatic 90210 style of acting mixed with the fervor of an action packed, gore soaked, war movie. though the film was straightforward and pro war, it's aesthetic and execution was ironic undermining itself.
