Start up games worth trying

I didn't know what to classify those games that start up without any other previous installments, so I'm just calling them start up games

So about 6 months back at least, I saw in my Gameinformer a new title for a game called Bulletstorm. Reading the article, I fell in love with the game. It's being made by People May Fly, who's only previous title was on the PC and titled Painkiller, a game which I loved, because nothing was more fun that shooting stakes into zombie skeletons and watching their rag doll bodies waggle as they were pinned to walls and other standing objects.

As soon as I get paid, I'm putting my money down upon my own copy of Bulletstorm, unknown if the game will be as great as I hope, or a failed experiment that cost Epic a lot of money

My question for you all is how often will you take a risk on a new start up game, or the begginging of a possible franchise? For example, how many people bought Bioshock on launch day, or when Gears was first released, how many people bought that? Would you take a risk on a game based on a preview, trailer, and who makes it or is developing it, or will you not put a cent down before you know a game is good by reviews and friends views?

I got Brutal Legend on launch based almost solely on the premise. I didn't regret it.

I bought Bioshock a year after it came out and still thought it was shit.

OT: I did this with Dragon Age, having hated Mass Effect and shitty combat. I loved the game, but I still hate the shitty combat.
I used Bioshock as an example since it's a popular game that most people enjoy, personally I'm not a fan either, and when I do beat it, it's only because my friends all tell me "It's super amazing when you get to THIS part"

I always wonder if when we pay for games at full price, if our judgement might be biased or clouded since we paid full price for the game, where if we got it cheaper or free, we'd like it less since we didn't invest as much (not saying that you secretly hate Brutal Legend or that it's a bad game...well I rented it for free and didn't like it as much as I'd hoped but still).

I feel that dragon age can't really be counted after all the hype about it being a spirtual successor to baldur's gate. I mean fair enough if you'd never played baldur's gate let alone heard of it, but if you loved it then probably not taking such a big "risk".

OT: I buy plenty of games that are new franchises on or close enough to release day. If I want to play something enough to go to the shops and buy it I'm not going to wait. If it's lousy you can just take it back. Or regret it. I figure even games that get amazing reviews can by lousy and some games that get lousy reviews are exactly the mindless, pointless, unintentionally funny game you feel like playing. And just because the game is a sequel there's no guarantee it will be anything like the original anyway.

I disagree; I bought Dragon Age at full price ($110 AUD) and I probably would have liked it more if it was cheaper. The combat and bits of the story just stopped it being great for that price.

OT: I did it with Dante's Inferno, think it's a lot better than God of War and worth it.
Also did it with Nier, probably my top game for 2010, or a tie with Fallout: NV

I do this all the time, I prefer to get games that aren't part of an established franchise simply because it is the only hope you usually have of getting something new and/or different.

I didn't think the game was shit. Much like Deus Ex: Invisible War it was a perfectly fine game, it just wasn't the game I wanted. I quickly grew bored and eventually people started buzzing about that one part so I decided to grind my way though when I had little else to play. In the end I thought it was serviceable enough but my experience was far from the revelatory experience others had with the product.
