Either base it of part of the expanded Universe (that's not terrible)... or create something new. Honestly, why do we need this?

Well keeping in line that the franchise is now a Disney one, I'd add in more spontaneous singing and dancing.
Hmm, making it take place into the far future would be a good idea. That way nothing related to the old movies would come up. It'd avoid having people complain about things being ruined.
Beyond that, maybe do it like how Kora handles bending. Have the society evolve to persecute the force users and removing their powers...and having both sith and jedi working together to beat whoever wants to destroy the force.

Never having read the EU personally I would pick up the story after the Return of Jedi, Luke dealing with the fallout of the collapse of the Empire and fighting his own demons about the scale of the carnage and being handed ultimate power with everyone looking up to him. Facing the temptation of becoming basically a second Emperor in order to solve all the problems would be a good moral test.
That or maybe a story about a Jedi trying to escape the order 66 purge and having to choose between doing something really noble or surviving. Again a good moral conflict because the Jedi would have to weight up his own survival as the last possible Jedi or letting the Empire do something pretty terrible.

I stand by what I said in feb, A crummy world full of plot holes and spelling errors. Also I think that's what we are going to get.
I might, I feel that the cliche of Luke fighting his evil clone can be left out. Everything else though, hell yes.El Danny said:

What would I write? My letter of resignation, that's too much pressure and besides, the 3 movies are great as they are and don't need a 4th.
i would write it so it takes place a significant time after the movies (like KotOR was set before the movies) so it doesnt have to be tied down
