When looking at my stealth itch it comes in a few categories. I have my own categories that I use based upon what I have urges to play. I know that not every category is covered so feel free to add the ones you use.

What games do you play to scratch your stealth itch and what category does the game fall under?

The Thief
Play to steal, no or minimal combat. Actively try to avoid combat and confrontation.

I play Thief II for this itch

The Shadow
You may kill or you may sneak. The goal is not always violence it could be capture intel or people.

I play Death to Spies: Moment of Truth for this itch.

The Assassin
You have a target you kill the target as quietly as possible.

I play Hitman Blood Money for this itch.

The Sniper
Long range target kill while remaining in stealth. Other side missions can exist in this but the main focus is long range stealth kills.

I play Sniper Ghost Warrior for this itch.

The Rouge
Similar to the assassin and the shadow but open to fantasy weapons, magic, daggers, ect.

I have a hard time finding a game for this itch so I play Skyrim as a Dark Brotherhood/Thieves guild member to achieve this goal.

The Hunter
Same as the Rouge but sci-fi.

I play AVP 2 for this fix.

The Spy
Steal information no combat, very similar to the thief but focus on information.

I play Uplink for this itch. Not the optimal game but it does work as not all spies are James Bond.

The Hollywood Spy
Steal info, kill targets, hack computers, but with more action. No limit to kills of how you get the job done as long as the job is done.

I play a sneaky character in E.Y.E. Divine Cybermancy for this itch.

The Wordsmith
Achieve victory through talking rather than combat. Trick, mislead, double deal, and lie your way to victory.
I games found no games for this category.

Not sure what it says about me that I have so many different stealth itches?

I don't like stealth games because the AI tends to be smart. However I like stealth in The Elder Scrolls and modern Fallouts because the AI hardly has any I.

Those must fall into the rogue category.

Deus Ex and Deus Ex: HR are The Shadow and The Wordsmith.

Metal Gear, all games, are The Shadow and sometimes The Hollywood Spy.

I really like Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory, cause it could fit some of these if you wanted to. Like on one of the missions, you could go through the entire map without knocking out or killing anyone at all, if you are careful enough and find the best pathways to go. Or you could silently take out every guard and person on the entire map.

Isn't there a game where you are the "saboteur"? It's not the same as killing people as your goal as the saboteur is to destory the said item/ object or anything non living.

Either way I don't play that many Stealth but I suppose the sleath like element in Legend of Zelda, Link is The Thief I guess? He was really getting fron point A to point B so he not exactly playing or stealing.

The only game I know of that focuses on destroying enemy structures sneaky like is the saboteur but I have not played it so I cannot say much about it.

I do think Link is more of an entitled jerk. "I have a quest I need your stuff" :p.

If I can find more saboteur goals in games(or if it gets enough support from others) I will add it to the list.

The Thief
Not sure if I have a specific game for this, but I find that most open-world games turn me into a total kleptomaniac. Games like the Fallout series or Oblivion/Skyrim, I'll loot anything that isn't bolted to the floor, whether I need it or not.

I still look back fondly to the time in Fallout 2 where I got caught trying to pickpocket some completely worthless pocket lint from a character, and having that character turn around and put a load of buckshot squarely into my stomach. People's overreactions in those game were occasionally hilarious.

The Shadow
For me this is Deus Ex and Deus Ex: Human Revolution. I tried to sneak my way through, knocking out anyone who I felt was either innocent or unaware of the bigger picture and were merely pawns used by my enemy, and only killing those who are clearly the enemy (like Majestic 12 troopers).

The Assassin
I don't really have anything for this.

The Sniper
Most shooters. I tend to gravitate toward sniper rifles and suppressed weaponry in general.

The Rogue
I had a Rogue alt in WoW back in the day...

The Hunter
Probably also the AvP games for me too, though I prefer AvP: Gold Edition.

The Spy
I don't think I have anything for this, although I suppose it's entirely possible to play the first Deus Ex like this, though I've never personally done a pacifist game.

The Hollywood Spy
Also Deus Ex.

The Wordsmith
The Fallout games allow for this to some degree. In Fallout 2 I had a character that was entirely diplomacy-centric, talking down foes or talking people into doing the fighting for me. If push came to shove, I had the trait that made enemies around me suffer from tons of critical failures so that I could still avoid fighting them, allowing them to run off instead.

It may not all be straight out full stealth games but I play Arkham City, Uncharted 2, and MGS 3: Subsistence to scratch my stealth needs. I haven't found a full-on stealth game that has non-linear gaming as well as being refined enough for my tastes. And no, I don't think I want my stealth game to be in the First Person view so scratch the Thief series.

My personal favorites ATM are Deus Ex: HR and Alpha Protocol for stealth gameplay. I tend to usually favor indirect combat if at all possible, I tend to remove enemies from the active field, but quitely, so as to not alert the guards.

Assassin's Creed and Dues Ex are my ideal stealth games. Dues Ex more so because you can be 100% pacafist if you want.

I lean more towards the Rogue/assassin type of thing. If it is a choice in a WRPG I usually take that route. Did it on Everquest, WoW, Dragon Age Origins, Dragon Age 2, Oblivion, Skyrim, KoA, and quite a few other games.

When it comes to games in modern settings I will have to admit I'm not too fond of the gameplay. Not to say they are bad games it just isn't my cup of tea. However, the funny thing is. Despite not really liking stealth in modern setting games I absolutely adore the Metal Gear Solid series. That speaks loads of its quality. But, I think it is moreso the presentation, interesting boss fights, and story telling that kept me hooked on that series.

For my stealth needs, pretty much Deus Ex, Deus Ex: HR, Thief 1 & 2, Oblivion, Skyrim, Fallout 3 and NV (despite it's shitty AI, I like to play stealthy in Bethesda's games, especially in Skyrim).
