Stealth in games that aren't exclusively stealth games.

Stealth in Far Cry 2 is pretty fun. It's always nice taking out an outpost with my dart rifle and then sneaking in and hacking the remaining troops with my machete. Another game where stealth is fun is BF2142 as the recon class with active camo. It's intense when someone walks by and you're so sure they can hear the faint crackle of your active camo device only for them to walk on by.

It's actually very interesting, but I've used stealth a great number of times in red dead. It wasn't easy though. FOr the odd bounty or two I've actually snuck up behind people and lassod them one by one, or knifed them all down. VERY satisfying.

Rockstar has this bad habit of giving their AI what I like to call "The 6th sense" or "The 3rd eye" Their NPC tend to have this ability to sense the player's presence when he is about, rather than actually having to see him. I remember in GTA Vice City I would take a helicopter onto the roof of a really tall building, out of eye sigh, and pull out my trusted sniper rifled. No matter who I shot, I got 2 stars. It was impossible for people to see me.

The same goes for a "Brotherhood" Complex where the NPCs just KNOW that any of their 'buddies' in the vicinity are shot dead, wounded, whimpering, or needto call mommy. They immediately know who shot them, where they are standing, and seem to not think that a massive rock in their path will stop their bullets. they don't conserve ammo as they flank, but simply shoot and walk in a path that sometimes happens to get you in view.

Makes stealth in a rockstar game almost impossible, but if you can pull it off, it's Worthwhile and satisfying, like the giving the game programmer the finger

I like a mix of gameplay styles, but I don't really like those games where you are forced to be stealthy as much. There is one exception, I liked the stealthy parts of Batman: Arkham Asylum because it was fairly forgiving if you screwed up and were seen.

But a game that I think mixed action with stealth fairly well, is Metro 2033. There are several areas where you can be stealthy and take people out with throwing knives to get the job done. But you can also just go in guns blazing and you are mostly okay as well.

I usually had to use a mix, because I managed to alert the guards to my presence before I had killed them all off with my ninja skills.

If there was stealth in FarCry 2, then I may have been invisible to the enemies, but their guns were sure able to spot me and fill me full of holes.

Well as long as you invest in the camo suit and stick to long grass and mount your operations at night they'll never know you were even there. I mean seriously I've infiltrated camps without touching a single guy before. Some are more difficult than others though, due to the absence of cover.

I liked the option of carefully picking out the soldiers in a base in Prototype. What I liked even more was that if you got bored with it, you could switch to the blade and decimate everyone. The stealth wasn't that interesting, but the option was there, and that was very nice.

Stealth is usually incredibly underpowered in RPGs.

To sum up: Choice = good. Random stealth levels = bad.
If you were bored, so bored that you picked up a deck of cards and started flipping them into a hat, you'd find the experience quite enjoyable, you might even see how many you can get in a row, aiming for 10 would be your personal, rewarding goal.

If, however, a special lady-friend was do engage in the act of doing it, but, she says due to some bizarre left-wing religion, you have to flip 10 cards into a hat before you start. You'd get pretty pissed off...

As with all other things, it depends on the game. Stealth sure wouldn't work in, say, Painkiller, but it would have been great if Call of Duty 4 had let me do some actual stealthing, rather than just hand me a silenced sniper for no bloody reason at all.

I always liked the Sly cooper Aproach to stealth, albeit how basic it was. It worked though.

That is weird though, unless that mission was scripted then it'd mean that the AI was capable of working with stealth. Smarten them a bit and you would have had a good stealth option.

this is an interesting issue which i have been raising for ages, why do most games not encorporate a way of playing stealthy. even MGS4 lets you run around with more guns than the chinese army and lets you buy as much ammo as you want from Mr. (i look like a pint of guiness) Drebin. i remember MGS when you had to find guns and ammo and even then you would think twice about using them because people could here you fire

ive started being stealthy on MW2 online, i get a silenced sniper, a silenced pistol and cold blooded pro and crawl around the bushes picking people of and then i get abused for using this style of play.

i think its to do with the level of intelligence and patience of the modern gamer, most people would rather run around blasting their way out of situations (asuming running very fast and firing alot of bullets will avoid you getting shot), whereas people like me go by the though process that being subtle and sneaking up on your opponents is more likely to be succesful than having a big sign saying "LOOK IM OVER HERE, SHOOT ME"

I seldom find games with particularly good stealth sections.

Come to think of it, I've yet to find a stealth game that's anywhere near as good as the Thief series.

I know it's not a common thing that comes to mind, but Halo: Combat Evolved had some very sneaky moments, mostly in Assault on the Control Room.
