Steam Backup Confusion

I am going to be switching to a new computer for chrismas so I tried to backup my games from steam on my external hard drive. It seems like it didn't work but it also seems like it must have.

I have about 50 some folders that are 650 mb each but they all only contain Counter Strike Beta parts. Is this just a name issue or did it just copy a lot of versions of counter strike beta?

I am copying the steam app folder now but I didn't know if this was a common problem.

sounds like something went wrong, when you create steam backups it creates a single folder per game with about 4-5 files inside, of which is a simple .exe that re-installs the game. But just copy and past the steam apps folder across to your external, and back into the steam folder after the format, verify all your games and your set, a lot easier and faster then the steam backup.
