Well...

If I have the desire to play a game that isn't installed I just reach for a disk unless of course I have steam without the internet.

But there's the problem, that doesn't always happen to me.
Do you have a internet connection when you try to go to offline?
Because otherwise it would appear every time you dont have a internet connection.
No, it's only a problem when I don't have internet, obviously.
Well im no expert on Steam and its function, so i all i can give as a tip is uninstall an reinstall! If it doesnt work i dont know what it is:/
I've tried that. Oh well, my internet works fine now so it's not much of a bother.

as far as i know with offline mode you just have to be online once to unlock offline mode. i've successfully gotten onto steam offline mode without having an active internet connection.
as for steam being expensive im callin bs. im guessin everyone missed the summer sales.

i will always be a steam user as it is incredibly easier then having to either have a tonne of shortcuts or to go through menus and stuff. plus it allows me to chat to my friends while playing games.

Yes, but if I want to actually play it, I'm still going to have to let it finish its updating, so being able to pause it doesn't really solve anything.
ya... that's why you turn off the auto-update feature for that game and only grab the patch when you want/need it.

seriously, you're complaining about a subsystem that is 100% extra convenience....at it's worst, it operates as if you didn't have it.

My main problem with it is the patching. Steam is really really god awful at patching.

-- Some games require special steam versions of patches. Which tends to mean if your game is broke your going to wait awhile.
Lie... the patches are smaller, take less time than the consoles to install and they do not interrupt game play.

As for the specific steam patches... may I ask which games received these? If it was fallout then I'm strait out ignoring any argument built on such non-existence foundations. Fallout NV was a disaster for all platforms, steam or no steam xD
Fallout 3, fallout new vegas, mount and blade series. (Steam is so awful for patching, that the mount and blade folks allow you to download a steam-free version of their game and unlock it)
Fallout 3 and NV, building your house on a vacuum argument.

Also I play mount and blade a lot via steam...
Concerning the patches with this game they did take some extra time and they did their own but lets face it, mount and blade is a brilliant brilliant concept which is enough to trump a terrible game in coding terms. The numbers of errors, glitches, crashes, problems multi threading correctly on Quad Core's, graphics not loading up.
Then you get to the mods, which are made in a very complex, though logical array method, which also increases problems if the slightest thing is out of place.

I love those games as I love the fallout games but... if steam only has problems with F3, F:NV and M&B they are doing fucking incredibly well xD

I swear, I've tried that for games and it didn't work and that was after looking for the solution for long enough. You may like Steam and that's nice for you, but some of us simply don't want to have to micromanage our files every time we have a new game to play.

I don't really mind steam, as i use it as my global friends list, everyone i play online with, i have on steam, so that part is all good.

As for games on steam, i rarely get games on steam, i prefer boxed RL versions, even though all the "register your game" crap more an more common in games is making them as limited as a digital copy.

So my major problem with steam is not steam itself specificly, but digital distribution preventing you from borrowing games to and from friends, which is legal.

Oh and also, every time i try to acces steam from my labtop, I need to confirm it over my e-mail account, cause it's a different computer than my stationary.
This is quite annoying.

... I hate games I don't have on Steam because I'll usually end up missing the overlay

I know it works on added shortcuts, but I always forget to add them.

Hell, I have Steam running even if I'm in a non-Steam game. Then I'll still hear the bloop of incoming messages (which is probably the most pleasant you-have-a-msg-sound ever).

My friend's brother hates Steam and barely plays anything on it (he's a dirty raging pirate) but is nevertheless online on Steam all the time.

People hating on Steam just want to feel special because they can come up with fancy-sounding reasons not to use something practical and popular. I'm so impressed by your superiorness (they're too cool for common superiority). Look at me, this is my impressed face, you self-absorbed tech-hipster.
And, I hate Steam pure and simple, I'll use it for a few games that need it, but I prefer not to. Who the fuck cares about a social aspect added on to DRM, it's still DRM. And, quit insulting people who hate steam just because you are a blind fanboy.
Steam stopped me from pirating. Why? Because it is easier than pirating games and often very cheap too. I think it's a great thing that really turned my gaming around and allowed me to pay full due to the game's creators without frustration.

I was thinking of buying a game on Steam recently and I've been somewhat worried about it, I think I can get it in other places but I don't know. Some people say it's great, but here some people are saying it's not so great, and now I'm not sure anymore.

I kind of get annoyed with it. I rarely use it. And it's 'use offline' feature is completely useless.

It's annoying because I only ever play the games I have on steam when I have no internet.

I don't see the problem either really, if anything having it on has near enough always enhanced my gaming experience since I use almost all of the features Steam has to offer.

Most of the other problems people have with Steam tend to come down to a rare bad experience or being e-hipsters.

Steam is downright amazing! What with the bullshit European prices and the fact that even with no manufacturing costs you're still forced to pay 60 bucks plus that whole "monitoring your computer" thing and the devious and often misleading EULA, what's there not to love! Digital distribution is definitely the future!
