I was downloading counter strike source off of steam. When the game was updating itself it said the update would take 6 hours. 5 hours later I checked it and it said the estimated update time went from 6 hours to 1 day and 5 hours! I just wanted to know if this is normal for steam downloads.

Sometimes it can't get as much data as it needs. If you leave it alone, eventually it will be fine.

Just let it run its course.
All downloads do this! I know this is a lot of memory but 1 day seems kind of alarming if you ask me.

You can also copy the game files from a friend into your Steam folder like so:

then you just go into Steam -> Library -> Counter-Strike Source -> Right Click + Properties -> Local Files then press "Verify Integrity of Game Cache" for it to reconise how much is there. Thankfully Steam aren't total Nazi's on coping their data over.

If you have unstable Internet speed, or if programs are automatically downloading and updating in the background, or if you are doing things like...visiting the escapist your timer can be effected as you use up bandwidth the downloaded could otherwise use.

Also steams own servers can have an effect on the timer depending on how much bandwidth they can allocate to you, all based of course on how busy those servers are at the moment.

I tend to have a rather stable connection, so the timer is actually pretty accurate for me. If it shows 5 hours, so long as I leave shit alone and turn programs that automatically update off, I'll get it in about that time.

Bandwidth is another issue. If you share your internet connection it will slow you downloads down. It took me 37 hours to download New Vegas.

Don't worry it's happened to all of us. You just gotta' deal with it. I'd suggest putting it on over night.

Well yesterday I downloaded the whole of Napoleon: Total War. 20 odd gigabytes.

Today it's all vanished. The download has begun again at 0%

Think yourself lucky :p

Yeah a lot of downloads do that. Steam gets a fuckload of traffic during their sale seasons, so expect the download rate to fluctuate ridiculously :)

When I was downloading the Counter Strike games the download rate staggered a lot and pushed up to 6 days at some points..

Yeah, the timer sucks, but it's based on your current download rate. Of course with some of the games I've had Steam skip a whole gigabyte during the download and the game runs fine, no files missing.

I found it to help if I paused all downloads at once, then resumed them all at the same time and for some reason they downloaded faster.

Currently downloading S.T.A.L.K.E.R Shadow of Chernobyl at 237.3 KB/s. Really good for me, and surprising because the Steam servers should be overloaded. :O

Restart steam, that often helps getting speeds back up, if it doesn't do anything just let it run, the servers are probably quite busy and i bet some stuff is coming down elsewhere on your end. Also if its suspended, just hit the resume button, its not hard stuff.

Suspended? Steam automatically suspends all of its downloads if you are playing a steam-run game.

If you are playing a steam game, that's why.
If not, you can (usually) fix it by manually pausing and unpausing the downloads.

I already tried that stuff and it didn't do anything. I restarted it, didn't work (I'm not playing a steam game.)I hit the resume button constantly, also didn't work.

By pause/unpause I meant to do each thing individually, the 'resume all' button doesn't work on suspended downloads to my knowledge.

That said, if it is still doing it after restarting steam, I am afraid I am unsure of what is going on. =(

well that kinds of brings me to another problem. see whenever I restart my computer, the screen zooms up, so I zoom it back out using control+ mouse-wheel down. but the problem is I can't do that with steam so I can only see and click on the left side of the screen. and yes I did open and close steam.

Wait what? Why would it be doing that? This is very sus, a series of simple problems with even simpler solutions... Really have you used a computer before?

While I am no expert on the subject, that does sound quite strange, if not a little malicious.
There may be something unwanted on your computer.

As for steam, you might be able to circumvent the sizing problem by Maximizing the window, that 'should' re-size it full-screen. Easy to do in XP, rightclick on the task bar icon, alas I am unsure on how to do it this way in Vista or 7.

Thanks dude you helped me fix my size problem but what's wrong with my downloading problem is that when I hit resume, it says downloading for 10 seconds and then goes back to suspended mode.
