So, I had a topic about this some months ago, when I bought and downloaded the Total War Pack, and only three out of the five games worked. Last night, I payed money once more to buy another game, (Armada 2526), and it crashed after only a few minutes. This is a rather low-budget game, and my computer is strong enough to handle it by far.
Now I try to buy the Warlords Expansion for Civ IV, a game I own since long ago and have installed, and it won't let me buy it, because "I don't own the game, and I need the game to buy an expansion". I even added the game to my Steam game-library.
Anyone know what more I can do? Steam just seems so god-damn unreliable, and I don't want to go through the email hassle every time Steam screws me.

In terms of the DLC thing, you have to have the key activated for the game through steam, if steam doesn't accept it, then you're out of luck. I know, it is infuriating, I've run into the problem a couple of times. Just last week when Splinter Cell Conviction's DLC was on sale, lol can't buy it because you didn't buy the original copy from steam.
In terms of games not working, yea it happens a lot, steam packages a bunch of games together, some don't end up working, very little gets done to fix the problem, I usually demand a refund for a defective product.

Hrm, how do I "activate" it? Find my old activation-key that came with the game and type it in..Somewhere?

Civ DLC/Exp's require the Steam version of the game installed to play. It usually says this on the storepage - though I'm not sure about Civ. Adding a game to your Steam games library does not make the game a Steam game, it's just a shortcut to the launcher on your computer.

As for a game crashing, Steam are usually quite good with adding compatibility notes on store pages. I've avoided many games as a result, but they cannot be sure of all compatibility issues and cannot list compatibility issues for every single problem. You'll see a lot of 'requires a quad core processor' or 'no support for Windows 7' compatibility notes, but wont find one that narrows it down to 'users running Windows 7 with a quad core processor and an nVidia GeForce 250 graphics card will not be able to run this game if they have SLI enabled'.

I'd recommend hitting the Steam forums, open a tech support ticket or contact the developer with a system info file and ask them if they can see any issues.

Besides the DLC issue, I read that as "I'm having a problem with games I bought on Steam, not Steam itself. So I'm going to blame Steam because that's where I got the game!"

Because if I bought a game at Wal-Mart and it didn't work. I'd totally take it up with them.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Im6yRpQrsaY. Steam does that. A LOT. it's even worse with VtmB. Honestly, just ask customer services or something.
