Why cant or better question, why wont Steam let you use serial numbers from other digital download sites like Gamersgate? I think if I paid the same amount for a the same game on another site I should be able to use the serial number I was given to add it to my Steam account. Are they just being greedy and forcing you to buy directly from them? Or is there an issue here Im not seeing?

I'm confused, you bought a serial number and not a game?

Because you totally can add games to your Steam account, even if they're not on Steam.
In the Steam library, near the bottom, click Add a Game and then a non-Steam game.

I think I must be missing something?

THere is an issue here your not thinking about. Capitalism. Everyone(manufacturer, Steam, Gamersgate)makes more money if you buy two different copies. I don't see why you need it on both. Can't you just get it on one?

Better question: If you have it on Gamersgate, then why bother switching over to Steam?

Also some services use a specialized format. I remember hearing about some Steam Keys not working with the non-Steam version of the game.

You can add a non Steam game to your Steam library.
Just hit "Add a non Steam game"

You can't use a third-party serial key to register a product on Steam...

If you think being in the Steam staff, why on earth would want that to work? Money money money. Always that comes first with these things, not logic.

Really? Because I think it's illogical to even think that both Gamersgate and Steam would have the same set of serial numbers.

Are you serious? You seriously can't see why Steam wouldn't want to pay all of the costs associated with serving you as a customer when you have never given them any money to provide those services?

Well, since you paid someone else, and want to use Steam's server time/bandwidth to download something (in other words, costing them money), yes I can say that you're not seeing something.

Thanks for pointing that out. I really didnt see it that way. I know steam tends to put out more updates for the same games. Im probally just kicking myself for not buyin Mount & Blade Warband on Steam.

Fair enough. To be honest, I'm not really in a position to judge. Back when Steam was in beta with Counter-Strike 1.6, I was one of the testers, and hated it. When they released DOOM 3 on there, I asked them via e-mail why I couldn't redeem my product key from the storebought copy I had. Was a bit red in the face after that one >_>

Sure enough, though, my entire PC library's now on Steam, nothing else. -_-;

I'm sorry if I sound like I'm being a dick, but this honestly boggles my mind. It costs Steam money to let you download and play these games from their service. You have not given Steam any money to provide this service to you. That is why they don't accept anyone else's CD key.

Actually, you do know that Steam is owned by Valve? Steam is a content delivery system, it doesn't make the money (IPs make the money from that). Valve makes the money from the games that are sold on Steam or where ever else its games are sold.

Actually there is a very limited list of games that you can activate on Steam after buying them retail (and I think it applies even if you buy from other DD services). The list can be found here:

Valve makes money when its IP is sold, but it also takes a share of every sale over Steam, which it owns. If Valve didn't make money from Steam, they wouldn't operate it.
