Steam Product Code Error

I recently bought Mount and Blade: Warband for my PC, but am having a bit of an issue with putting it on Steam (which, to my knowledge, is the only way to play it). I am being asked for a "product code", which is located "on the DVD jewel case, manual cover, disk insert, or inside the case under the disk". The code, according to a Steam support topic I found, must be 13, 18, or 25 characters long. The only code I have found is 24 characters long, and, of course, Steam declares it invalid. I have searched far and wide for a solution and asked every source possible up to this point. Anyone have a solution?

Did you buy it retail, off Steam or another source?

I don't believe you have to register with Steam to play it if you didn't purchase it there.

The setup option that comes up when I put in the disk takes me straight to Steam. I opened the folder to view the files on the disk, and the Steam setup was the only one available. I'm no expert at PC gaming, so I wouldn't know how to look for another setup method/file.

This was a common problem.

When printing, apparently the label just wasn't long enough, and one digit didn't make it on. You can try re-adding it to Steam, by copy and pasting all the digits you currently have, and then just adding a random extra one, through process of elimination.

So like xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxx1 and if that doesn't work, replace the one with a 2, and so on.

This is from the Steam website, link here:

"Mount and Blade Series...
Note:
Retail CD-Keys for this game cannot be registered through Steam..."

Slycne is probably right, you shouldn't have to register it with Steam to play it. This happens with a lot of third party games that Steam happens to also sell.

Does your retail box advertise Steam, Valve, or "Powered by Source"? I'm looking at the back of my Left 4 Dead 2 box, and it has this next to the system requirements:

NOTICE:
Product offered subject to your acceptance of the Steam Subscriber Agreement ("
SSA")...
(total text is 7 lines long)

The missing digit sounds most likely - just try numbers and letters. A bit of a pain, but obviously there's been a misprint.

Nope, no luck with that tactic.

I bought the game at a Best Buy, so... how do I install this thing when the only .exe command available links me to Steam?

Contact Valve tech support, and look around the game's Steam forum.

It may take a while for the support to get back to you (couple of days maybe) but they're pretty good.

Woodsey probably has the best advice, contacting Valve. I would also contact the developer, Taleworlds, as well (taleworlds.com).

Could you post a list of the files that appear when you explore the installation DVD? If possible, include their extensions. It shouldn't be necessary to go in to any folders, just the first level of files.

Also, Mount and Blade Warband has a demo on Steam. If this is a Steam registerable game you may have to download it from Steam instead of installing it off your DVD. You could get a jump on the process by downloading the demo in to your Steam account now. The plus side of this is you get to play the demo while you wait to hear back from valve.
