steam promos...

So, I was playing tf2, and I saw this cool hat: http://wiki.teamfortress.com/wiki/Spiral_Sallet I looked it up, and it turned out if you played this game spiral knights past a certain point, you would get it.

I had tried the game before, but decided to give it another shot, as it was on steam now. If I haven't made it painfully obvious before, I am a huge steam punk, so when I saw this: http://wiki.spiralknights.com/Steam_Knight_Mask

Well, I wanted it VERY badly. unfortunately the promo says I need to invite five steam friends who then finish the tutorial, I have five friends on steam, some of which don't even log on for weeks, and the rest already play the damn game, so I am stuck coming up with an overly complicated plan to get that hat, as a true tf2 player, steam punk, and (now) spiral knights player should.

Anyway, since this thread should have some discussion value,

Have you ever been drawn to a game because of a promotion, and then stayed because of other reasons?

What are the greatest lengths you have gone to to get a cosmetic and/or promotional game item?

I always found Spiral Knights system confusing.

Only game that i played and include cosmetic items is TF2 and MMO's
In MMO's i just play, and in TF2 i just wait.

I installed Alien Swarm just for the TF2 hat when i was pleasantly surprised how good the game was.

Honestly I think Valve's been going a little overboard with all the promotional hats...

Personally I was drawn to TF2 as soon as they did the Mac update, heard many good things about it so I jumped for it and have been playing semi-regularly ever since.
And for getting a cosmetic item in a game.. I think I traded a few refined metals for a hat in TF2 a while back, that's about it.

I'll help out, I was about to download this anyway because I'm bored and currently banned from World of Warcraft for three days, so I'm looking for something to just play for a while.

As for the first question, nope. I've never been successful in recruiting anyone. I've recommended the game to people, but they've never bought a month or whatever. I've gone to quite long lengths to get cosmetic items on Guild Wars though, I have two accounts, both of which have about 6 characters each dedicated to just waiting. Every 12 months I'll log on to them and claim the yearly birthday present. I've been doing it since they started giving them to players, good way to get cool looking minipets.

Huh...I read the title as "stream pornos" Not sure what I was expecting...

I generally don't like anything that forces you to annoy and gather up people to do some trivial thing. Usually ends up with people trying to find some roundabout way of doing it themselves. Like that achievement in Portal 2 that required you to do the training session with someone on your friends list who hadn't done any co-op yet. I know a lot of people just went about creating extra dummy accounts and the like. Just becomes annoying.
