I live in the UK, and because I pre-ordered Dawn of War 2, I got it a day early in this morning's post.

I tried installing it, but after I entered the CD key, I get a message from Steam saying.

"Not Avaliable
Sorry, but the following items are not avaliable for purchase in this country. Your purchase has been cancelled.
Steam"
"
and my only option is to quit installation.

I know why this is, it's because the game isn't official released until tomorrow, but still WTF?

How can they tell me the game isn't available for purchase in my country when I have the physical game in my hands, a legally purchased copy, not pirated.

Furthermore, if the game isn't available for purchase in my country, then why have they taken my money? If I have the goods and the seller and company have my money, then I think that constitutes as a purchase.

I know it's not really a big deal, since I only have to wait until tomorrow, but on the other hand it's really annoying, that even though I've bought a physical copy, my access to it is dictated by Steam.

I not even interested in the multiplayer at all, I just want to play some single player campaign and skirmishes, so why do I have to deal with Steam? I didn't buy the game from them, and I don't really intend to use their services at all, so why the hassle?

The least they could do is let me install the game and access the campaign mode, or failing that, they could at least change their bloody error message to something more appropriate, that doesn't insinuate I've done something wrong, or been ripped off and my physical game is worthless.

Most of my questions are rhetorical and this is more just a rant to blow off steam (ho hum), like I said before it's not really that much of a problem to wait until tomorrow (I also got Street Fighter IV early today, which I can play on my 360 - at least Microsoft aren't being dicks!) but I know I'm not the only person in the UK or Europe feeling annoyed at Steam today.

How do you feel about the principle of this, that physical games are being treated like digital downloads and being controlled by the internet?
Is this just another form of DRM that we have to live with because of piracy?

Also has anyone in the UK or Europe experienced similar problems with physical games being denied by Steam?

When do you think Steam will approve of my purchase, will it be literally tomorrow, i.e. after midnight tonight, as soon as it's the 20th GMT, or will it be when it's the 20th according to Steam, taking into account whatever time zone their offices are located it, or will it not be "available for purchase" until tomorrow morning when the shops open?

On the plus side I did get a (surprisingly heavy) Dawn of War/Blood Ravens key ring, a nice steelbook case and I still got to enjoy that 'new game smell' so it's not all bad, just annoying.

From Steam:

"European Costumers will be able to play, starting from Friday morning.(GMT)"

Anyway Steam is fine is much better then the DRM from EA anyway. As for the internet taking over the game control business well...like my friend Robert Zimmerman once sang:

"Then you better start swimmin'
Or you'll sink like a stone
For the times they are a-changin'."

You can't blame Steam for policy of the store that released the game early. They probably shipped it early to ensure that you get it by the time it comes out officially.

A little sad that the store you bought it from went out of their way to please you and instead of being happy about it you complain because you can't play it early.

I would be careful - the way it said "your purchase has been cancelled" make me think they locked the key out. Not saying they would, its Valve's system after all, but im saying its possible.

I ordered it from Game.co.uk, the UK equivalent of Gamestop, so I hardly think they went out of their way. It's normal for them to send out games early, so that you have them on the day of release, which is nice, but I've pre-ordered lots of games from them in the past, it's become normal for me to get them and play them a day early, it's one of the perks of pre-ordering.

I think happy is too strong a term, but I am glad that I've got it early, but without even being able to install the game, it is a bit redundant.

I suppose it does seem like I'm being ungrateful to the huge game company that sold me the my game, but I do appreciate the bonus key ring, that was a nice surprise.

I know it's not really Steam's fault, they're just following protocols, but it's just a bit annoying. It's the first time I've ever been affected by any kind of DRM and it seems a bit intrusive that my game is unusable until tomorrow.

I think it wouldn't have been as annoying if the error message was worded differently, something like "We're sorry, your game can't be activated until the official release date", rather than the ominous "The game isn't available for purchase in your country, your purchase has been cancelled".

That message seems to re-emphasise that Europe gets it's game later than the US (rubs salt in the wounds, if you like) and kind of implies that the game I've already paid for is null and void, just a circular piece of plastic in a fancy tin.

But like I said before, I'm not really distraught, just a bit taken aback.

I think I only really have to wait until midnight, or 12:01, I just hope Steam have their watches wound up, or there'll be hell to pay!

EDIT:

Yeah, that's what really got to me, why I'm a bit taken aback, it's ominous.

How can my purchase be cancelled when I have the legally purchased physical copy? It seems wrong and unfair if that's the case. There's no literature accompanying the game warning you not to try and activated it until the release date, or any such warnings in the e-mails saying my order has been dispatched and is on it's way.

I wouldn't be sure about that. They still haven't figured out the fact that ?1 =/= $1 so the concept of time zones must be like quantum physics for them.

I just checked my e-mail now, and I got a message from Game.co.uk with my pre-order code and instructions how to unlock the bonus Wargear.

It's just a shame that the first step in the instructions is 1. Install the game...

That sucks, but if the worst happens, shoot a message to Steam customer support, and they will help you out. I hate DRM, but I love Valve, which always puts me in an awkward position when talking about Steam.

Why would someone from Europe, except for UK of course, want to buy anything at Steam right now?

Their prices are twice as big as the prices in my local video store.

We don't, we bought out games on discs from shops, but we've still got to wait until Steam decides we're allowed to use them.

Reading on the Relic's DOW2 forums, this seems like a bit of a cock-up by all accounts.

Apparently Steam told some parts of Europe the game would be released today, although officially everyone has to wait until tomorrow before they can activate their game.

Also, apparently we might have to wait longer than after 12:01 GMT to use the games we already have, until it's actually 12:01 on the 20th US time, even though if you purchase it through Steam you can already download and install the game, ready to play at 12:01 GMT.

There's a lot of speculation on the DOW2 forums and some grumblings that Steam or THQ are doing this on purpose as an an incentive to buy it digitally through them and not to buy it on disc, and to make you pay extra for a product you already have in your hands.

I don't know what to make of all this speculation to be honest, but there's nothing like a bit of "new release DRM controversy" to spice things up and give you a false sense of elation, when all you've done is managed to install your game!

Another thing steam. When you download a game, why doesn't it install to the hard drive, and why can't you play games from a CD if you're not logged in? Steam is messed up man!

Lol.

I love how pirated games are better products. Cracked versions don't have a "check the date" issue.

It will probably be 12:01 on Friday, when -they- say that you can play it.

I don't know. I hate all sorts of digital distribution in theory, but I'm forced to deal with it.

Or people could just start pirating it out of spite. Way to go steam.

Sadly, they have taken away the only reason I bought anything at Steam - cheapness. Steam used to be 1/3 cheaper than retail games. Now it's 2 times more expansive on Steam.

Oh, and I don't need to have an Internet connection to play games I legally own.

That wont happen. People wont stop pirating and Gaming companies wont stop making their games with DRM. The only thing you can hope is that DRM becomes less intrusive and more..."friendly". Steam works and has room to improve the only wrong thing here is that Europe will have to wait one day to play DoW2.
