If I buy The Sims 3, a game that is available on both Steam and Disk, will I be able to open it with Steam after installing it off the disk? (That is playing it without having to have the disk in my computer at the time)

I just want to know because it's cheaper in stores, but I like the convenience of Steam.

Not all games can just be activated on Steam.

Only the games on this list [https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=7480-wusf-3601] can be, and The Sims isn't on there.

You can still open it with Steam and have the Steam overlay, but it's just a shortcut to the CD installation and will still have whatever DRM the cd version comes with.

But if I actually spend the extra money to buy it from Steam I'll be able to open it with Steam, right?

Yeah, if you buy anything from Steam you need Steam to use it.
