Hey,
I literally just bought Fallout 2, and when I have tried to download it so that I can play it, a window saying "Steam - Updating" and a loadbar appears, and stays rooted to nothing, then an error message that says "Steam.exe (main exception): To run Steam, you must first connect to the internet" appears...

Well, I am connected to the internet, I'm trying it now and it says the same thing...
Does anyone have any ideas what I can do to sort this out?

I have that same problem with steam on my mac. Well, sort of. It basically won't start up because it refuses to acknowledge the fact that I'm connected to the internet.

Good luck to you.

Restart Steam or reboot the PC might work. Also maybe your firewall or anti-virus program is blocking off Steam.

Try stopping the process and restarting, if that does not work re-install, and if that does not work look at your network card. If you have both a wired and wireless connection try disabling the one you are not using. Also try flushing your DNS cache because that seems to work sometimes. The command is ipconfig /flushdns. Also try pinging the steam servers (look them up for your area) to see if your isp or firewall is blocking them: ping , and a route trace can see if something is hijacking your connection: tracert

I had this, somewhere in the application support directory is a steam folder, delete that and it might work again.
