Simple enough, I've got a bit of cash that I'm looking to spend on games, so I'm turning to the gaming community for advice. What are some great, can't miss games on Steam (preferably cheap, under $20) that you guys enjoyed playing?

I don't really have anything on Steam yet, so don't worry about suggesting something I've already got. I'm sorta looking for something with a mix of action and strategy (emphasis on action), as Overlord and Command and Conquer caught my eye, but I wanted to hear some other suggestions before I decided on anything.

What sort of games do you enjoy? Steam is host to quite a few genres, with great games found within each one. A personal favorite of mine is still Team Fortress 2, which is continuing to be a great value (since Valve still provides updates for it, free of charge); another game I've yet to play, but heard great things about, is Magicka, which is this overhead 4-player magic game with crazy combinations of powers to mess with. Be sure to check Steam every so often as well; sometimes they like to spring a midweek or weekend sale on a game you've had your eye on, and give great deals on said games.

If you haven't played it (and like simple little RTSes), Plants vs. Zombies is ten bucks. Also, if you haven't played it (and like fast, difficult 2D platformers... and have a USB gamepad of some sort) Super Meat Boy is... fifteen. Dayum, I got it for three during the holiday sale...

Take your money over to GOG.

If you must buy something from Steam why not Rome: Total War, or is it Total War: Rome, I can never remember, any way its probably the best Total War game IMHO.

The best buy on Steam is Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines, but it is a third/first person RPG. probably the best one ever made. Not very strategic though.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R.
Deus Ex
BioShock
Crysis
Half-Life, Counter-Strike, or any other Valve game
Fallout
Quake, Doom, Unreal Tournament, Painkiller, Serious Sam, or any other old-school FPS
The Elder Scrolls
Anything above I consider must-play.

Killing Floor is kinda fun. It was an old UT04 mod that became its own standalone game. Think Left 4 Dead meets CS, where 6 players fight through 4-10 waves of "specimens" before taking on a boss monster. I think it's about 20 dollars now, but during Steam sales, it always manages to find its way on the list.

Check out Spellforce. Both games (including all current expansions) are 50% off right now and it's a great mix of RTS and RPG (first game is more RTS-y, second more RPG-y). It might be a little old, but it still looks (except the 'wooden puppet' cutscenes) and plays superbly.

The Dawn of War II series easily. Aaction with strategic elements playing a bigger emphasis depending on what difficulty level you play. It also has some RPG elements which affect what equipment you can use - Wargear is not just a 'stat bonus', different weapons are utilised in different ways. There are also two types of armor, normal and Terminator which change how your game plays out.
I am pre-loading Retribution and planning to do a review for each individual campaign as I go through it right now, though that's about $60.

Team Fortress 2. Easily my favorite multiplayer game out there. With nine distinct classes to choose from and multiple unlockable items for each, chances are good you'll find something that fits your play style. Also, the game has a great sense of humor. It's one of only a few titles I can think of where my character's death has prompted straight-up laughter from me. The community's pretty friendly to boot.

Killing Floor. A polished and entertaining co-op zombie shooter. Folks like to compare it to Left 4 Dead, but I don't think it's a fair assessment, as its gameplay mechanics are vastly different. Basically you earn money from killing zombies (or "specimens" as they're known in-game) to buy better weapons between waves, which in turn helps you survive more deadly adversaries. If the team survives, the map culminates in a boss battle. Before each map begins you're given the chance to pick a "perk," which is similar to character classes. Over time, you can level up these perks by meeting certain criteria (usually just playing your assigned role gets the job done) that will improve the perk's effectiveness.

Monday Night Combat. Much like Killing Floor and Left 4 Dead, folks like to compare this game to Team Fortress 2. Again, I'd say that's not really fair, since they play very differently (the only big similarities are the visuals and humor). Set in a whimsical-with-dystopian-undertones future where televised arena combat is all the rage, two teams of clones try to defeat the other team by escorting combat robots to the enemy's money ball and destroying it. There are six different classes, each with vastly different roles, skills, and weapons. Gameplay is kind of a cross between Star Wars: Battlefront and DOTA.

Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War. These games truly capture the crazy, grimdark awesomeness of the Warhammer 40k universe. First one or the sequel, you really can't go wrong. I personally prefer the first game though, as you can field more units into battle. It's probably my favorite RTS of all time in fact, as the focus is more on battlefield combat and fielding a well-balanced army instead of spamming single units. I would recommend getting Dawn of War: Platinum Edition, as it includes the first two expansions, Winter Assault and Dark Crusade. These expansions add a grand total of three new factions (on top of the four existing ones) and are extremely well-polished. Stay away from the Soulstorm expansion though, that one is decidedly sub-par.

Those are my top recommendations. Keep an eye on the main store page, as Steam likes to have weekly sales where you can get quality titles for real bargains (usually anywhere from 25-75% off).

I'm also recommending TF2, has tons of playability and gets a fair amount of updates.

Killing Floor is worth a look if you want something that can last a while without getting boring.

Alien Swarm is worth getting as well (being FREE and everything)

You beat me to it. D:

Monday Night Combat is a lot of fun. It's not good if you want a game with a story, but if you're looking for something that can kill time in an enjoyable manner, it's a safe bet. Plus, any game that doesn't take itself too seriously is good in my book.

I'd also like to recommend Magicka. It's a spoofy RPG with excellent writing and some interesting game mechanics. I haven't completed it yet myself, but it really is an entertaining game. The only thing that works against it for me personally is that I can't save and quit whenever I want to - you have to reach checkpoints.

Don't forget to check the Demos page, there are about 300 there and some have been pretty great.

Magicka is pretty awesome, Lara Croft: GoL is the first one I've enjoyed.
You could probably get the Orange box and enjoy it.
C&C is still on sale for another few hours.
If you want action RPG you might want to try Mass Effect or KotOR. The Mass effect 2 and Dragon Age 2 demos are pretty great if you enjoy BioWare.
For 12.50 you can get pretty much all the Spellforce stuff, sort of older school RTS/RPG. I can't remember if you can go hands on as the Main Character though.

I've only done the demo, but Magicka is on my list of to-buys from Steam. And this place is making me look at MNC a little more seriously as well, although I don't want to buy it if I'll miss out on the cool TF2 socks I could get.
