Amnesia: The Dark Descent is a pretty good game and so Mass Effect and Mass Effect 2. The only bad thing is they are $19.99. Half-Life 1 and Half-Life 2 are both $9.99.

Mount & Blade Warband.
There is no way you are going to need another game after playing Mount and Blade for the first 6 months ^^
After that you should go buy Killing Floor - It is like left 4 dead, but for real macho men :{|
If you want strategy and don't mind the graphics try out the new Cossacks expansion - You will be amazed of how good this game is even if it's like a hundred years old.
I noticed you like Overlord, you have to try out Dungeon Keeper - Much more entertaining and wittier than Overlord.

A bard's tale from 2005 is about £7 on steam here, it's worth a giggle, was thinking of even doing a user review of it.

MNC is worth the money if you can find a server with enough players. Where I live the server was full for about 2 weeks, then suddenly everyone stopped.

I do have a guest pass for that if you want.

I've only done the demo, but Magicka is on my list of to-buys from Steam. And this place is making me look at MNC a little more seriously as well, although I don't want to buy it if I'll miss out on the cool TF2 socks I could get.
Hate to break it to you, but those were only given out to those who owned TF2 and bought MNC within the first week of its release. Don't let that stop you from getting it though, it's lots of fun!

The neat thing about MNC is that you can still make important contributions to the team even if you're still learning the ropes. For example, it's actually more important to destroy enemy bots than it is killing opposing players, as bots are the only things that can take down a money ball's shields. Indeed, the scoreboard at the end of a match ranks players not by their player kill/death ratio (though that is listed), but by how much money they earned destroying bots.

If you are into Medieval warfare i would suggest Mount and Blade: Warband.
It's a great game where you are the commander of your own little group or army of soldiers. You join the battles yourself as your hero character and level yourself aswell to gain abilities which help either on the battlefield or with stuff like trade or moveing faster on the map.
The battles can be quite big and you can direct your units by placeing flags or just yelling out commands in real time. It is great fun :D

Later in the game you will eventually have to either found your own kingdom or help an existing kingdom take over the world..

also, theres a new installment in the series comeing out this year :D it's called "With fire and sword"

the orange box, ok, its 30, but it has 5 good games (if it has to be <= 30, stalker soc was good (especially with the mod) and its 20, and after you buy that, you can get Stalker call of pripyat for 15)
what kind of game are you looking for
if its RTS, supreme commander 2 is great (wait for a sale, they seem to have one once a month on that dam game)
world of goo was great (not sure about its price, but its an indie game, i know its not that expensive)
fo3 was great, stand alone is 20, and with the dlc its 30 (which is worth it)

or wait till Christmas and buy 20 games

I've just registered on gog.com (yeah, I took my sweet time, I know) and I can finally say: screw Steam, its stupid interface, website, DRM and pricing. Go GOG. If you don't use Steam yet, it's pointless to start now.

And for recommendation: MDK, MDK2, Beyond Good & Evil. Yeah neither is strategic, but they're fun.

BTW after registration, GOG gave me FOUR free games. One of them seems like an action/strategy mix.
^What he said, oh and get Total Annihilation from there, it is so worth the money!

EDIT: Spellforce Universe is on sale on Steam i think, that is a good game

Simple enough, I've got a bit of cash that I'm looking to spend on games, so I'm turning to the gaming community for advice. What are some great, can't miss games on Steam (preferably cheap, under $20) that you guys enjoyed playing?

I don't really have anything on Steam yet, so don't worry about suggesting something I've already got. I'm sorta looking for something with a mix of action and strategy (emphasis on action), as Overlord and Command and Conquer caught my eye, but I wanted to hear some other suggestions before I decided on anything.
I have one recommendation: Don't buy ANYTHING until there is a sale. Then fill your boots.

XCOM
The whole series or atleast the first.
They are mind numbingly ruthless and difficult but it is the most satisfying experience when you destroy a whole alien base with nothing but 8 soldiers armed with laser rifle and power armor.

I will simply list the games I have bought over Steam:
Portal
GTA Pack- That's all the GTA's from the first to San Andreas). That was a special deal though, so failing that, just San Andreas.
Far Cry- Bought this recently, really enjoying it so far.
