I'm sort of new to PC gaming, one of my friends has Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War and I want to get it on Steam as it is cheaper to do so.

He has the disc version, so if I was to buy it on Steam, can I only play against people who bought it that way? I'm kind of new to Steam in terms of multiplayer anything so I'm not sure how it works exactly.

Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

It depends on the game. Many games, multiplayer will be playable across all versions of the game. But, many games use Steamworks for their multiplayer, which is tied to Steam.

From my brief look at Dawn of War, it appears that it doesn't use Steamworks for multiplayer, and should be compatible with non-steam versions. I could be wrong though.
