So I've seen some steam sale threads, but what I am looking to setup is a thread where people can give informed decisions about games (ones they have played) for others, so they can know what they are getting into.

(yes yes, reviews and all that stuff are online, but I RARELY agree with critics, so I tend to trust user comparisons/enjoyment)

OT: Mars War logs is on the steam sale right now, and I'm curious as to who's played it and if they think it's well worth the 10 dollar asking price it has on it right now. Also, if you could, compare it to any other rpg's that it might be like (or opposite of if thats all you can think of).

questions and answers are all welcome in here, I'll try to give informed opinions on any games people might ask about that I have played

I've played a few hours on the new tomb raider, and watched my friends play some of the later levels, and so far I'm having a blast with it, and I can only hope more female protagonists are written like Lara is in this game. If you enjoy some adventure/platforming with some very lite upgrading and shooting mechanics, then I can't see why you wouldn't enjoy this game.

You can always go to the Steam Discussions and read up on people's opinions there. There's usually at least one "Worth it?" thread in every game forum.

OK, just more general advice first - if you want to see everything that's been reduced, not just the featured deals on the front page, go here [http://store.steampowered.com/search/?special=1] - there are items that are as much as 90% off. Yes, not advertised up front and are that price for the entire sale. Yes, you are welcome. Now I'll make you even more grateful - since that list has everything that's on offer, including DLC, you will get pages and pages of DLC. If you choose Games from the dropdown menu at the top, you'll get games only. Or something else, but I assume you'll be after games. You can also sort by price here [http://store.steampowered.com/search/?sort_by=Price&sort_order=ASC&category1=998] are all games on offer from lowest to highest price. So loads of game you can buy for change. You're welcome.

Now, here are some recommendations, I'll keep it short:
- FTL: Faster Than Light - brilliant roguelike space game. 75% off until tomorrow, I'd recommend it even at full price.
- Surgeon Simulator 2013 - what can I say? If you're about to have an operation, this is EXACTLY what it's going to be like. Here, have a demo [http://www.kongregate.com/games/BossaStudios/surgeon-simulator-2013]
- Commandos 1, 2, and 3 - if you like strategy/tactical games, this is a great series. You get a team of commandos (duh) each with different abilities and you have to tackle missions. Games are cheaper than chips. Literally. They add up to, like, a sandwich worth of money.
- Ghost Master - the price of 1 commandos game. Flawed, I admit, but had lots of fun for £0.74. Biggest advantage of the game - it's £0.74 (I assume it's a dollar otherwise), if you don't like it, whatever. But I do suggest playing the game, of not for anything else, it does have some really interesting mechanics and also you can give some fairly complex commands to your underlings, along the lines of "Use only your lower level abilities until a blond woman comes and is alone, in that case, use the most powerful skill you have". Pretty sweet, the mechanics need more exposure, we need more of them.

yeah I just figured with how many people are steam sale fanatics it'd be easy to get some input on here, but i did check on the steam forum and there was one thread with people discussing the value of the game and I did end up getting it, it seems to concentrate on a bit of a tighter story and it seemed like the "flaws" were things that wouldn't bug me in the slightest.

nice pointers for anyone not super familiar with steam, and I will back that FTL recommendation 200%, usually i don't like games that are hard or are perma-deaths, but fuckin christ if i haven't played that game 40+ campaigns now.

It looked interesting to me and I got it at a lower rate maybe 1-2 months ago. I'm not really the best person to advise here, and actually got into a "discussion" with another escapist about this one. My *first* impression wasn't great. The controls are unintuitive, the interface even more so. Before a recent patch, the FoV was stuck on "tunnel vision" mode and the controls weren't customisable.

I personally found it very inaccessable, though the story (what I've uncovered at least) isn't too hard to follow. My personal opinion is that it's a great idea that suffers from poor execution. The core of the game is sound, but to get to it is laborious and a chore. If you don't mind persevering, you may enjoy it. I didn't after some hours and haven't picked it up again since. For me, I think I'll wait a few month in the hope that a patch will iron out some of my issues and give it a second chance.

Imma have to agree with previous posts, Mars War logs has a pretty cool feel and setting, but the gameplay doesn't feel smooth and the character interaction & voice acting feel forced at best.

Though apparently they did patch it a while back to improve the VO/Conversations, but not tried that out yet.

well from what i saw, at least in a video, you can plug in a controller, and on the steam forums alot of people were bitching about the keyboard bindings and such, so i'm sure i'll be fine as i've been playing alot of games lately with my 360 controller.

and i am one of those people where if the gameplay is mediocre (the witcher 1 i actually liked the mediocre combat) i can persevere through it just fine for the story/atmosphere. so i did end up getting it and will probably try it tomorrow.

hell my favorite studio is KING of "great idea, but poor execution" (obsidian) and i love their games to death.
