So, I recently came across the Valve pack for sale on steam. 45£? is pretty amazing for a list of games that are pretty much all considered masterpieces, but when I was about to buy it, it hit me: The individual games are dirt cheap as well. Looking more closely I realised that the only games I care about are these:
* Counter-Strike: Source(I probably won't even be playing it that much as the one time I tried it I honestly thinking "why am I not playing Bad Company 2 right now?", but hey, it's very popular, so maybe there's something to it when you get into it.)
* Half-Life 2 with episodes
* Left 4 Dead
* Left 4 Dead 2

This leaves out a lot of games. I own Portal 2 already and have played through Portal on xbox, though I don't own it on PC. I'm not sure why I would buy Counter-Strike/Condition Zero when I already have Source or why I'd buy Team Fortress Classic the TF2 is free. As for Half-Life I'm a little on the fence. I don't really know how it's aged and I'm wondering if those 5? are better spend somewhere else (oddly enough it's more expensive then Half-Life 2.) As for Ricochet and Day of Defeat, I haven't even heard of them.

Becaus I'm lazy I put this into my trusty calculator and the games I'm really interested in add up to 30? with the -75% sale on the Left 4 Dead games, which saves me 15?, which isn't a lot, but I'm on a pretty tight budget.

So my question is this: Do you feel that the remaining games have a value of 15? or should I spend my money somewhere else?

Day of Defeat is a great mod, I like it better than TF2 (no hats!). It has a dedicated group of players so it can be daunting to newcomers because those guys know the game backwards and forwards. That said it they are pretty friendly for the most part. The same can be said for CS without the same level of friendliness. Counter Strike 1.6 is for competitive players, a lot of e-sports types don't play source. Ricochet, ugh, when people talk about how great Valve is they aren't talking about Ricochet. I'd say skip the games you aren't interested in, it's nice to play Half Life before Half Life 2, but not necessary and maybe in ten years or so you'll be able to play Black Mesa: Source.

I'm also starting to doubt Counter-Strike. Many of my friends play it a lot but I'm wondering if a half-a-decade old FPS with a relatively hardcore fanbase that I'm not particularly enthusiastic about is what I really should be spending my money on. It's 10? right now, which is the same as the Stalker games even after the sale(I missed the sale with about 1 hour) and Prototype.

With only the Orange Box and the L4D bundle I'm down to 15? total.

Another question on my mind is how has the original Half-Life aged and how are the expansions?

Why would you get Counter Strike, you ask? Mods, skins and custom maps. I never play the core game; I hate it.

I would get the Half Life games and only Left for Dead 2, I don't see the point of getting the first one(do you care about the story?). I still prefer Killing Floor over Left for Dead though.

Get the games you want. The pack is pretty cheap(I bought it), but if you have no intention of playing some of the games and it works out to be cheaper to get what you want, go with that.

I'm sure something else will pop up in the daily sales that you might want with the money you saved not buying the whole thing.
