They have a new sale each season.
If a game goes on sale that you've been eyeing, you might want to do a little research first to see if it's cheaper anywhere else, then snag it. Or, you can just go batshit insane with all the 2.49-9.99 flash sales and create an impossible to keep up with backlog like everyone else does. Your call.

Well, as far as I'm aware, they do Summer, Autumn, Winter/Christmas(this one) and maybe a Spring sale as well, not too sure on that last one.
As for games to look out for, that really comes down to what games you like to play. If there's a specific game you want, I recommend buying it, if it goes on either flash sale, daily deal or community's choice. If it's not there right now, wait until the last day of the sale to buy it, you might get lucky with the sales.

The Autumn sale cleaned me out, so the winter sale doesn't really matter to me much. Although I did pick up Cortex Command.

Picked up the newest Prince of Persia game, $2.50. Made me make a Wiiu account. The screen is scrunched with big black borders. Must be a settings thing. Happily, my 360 controller works on this PC version of the game.

They do them for seemingly every halfway major event now.
Pro-tip: don't buy anything until it's on a daily deal or in a flash sale. Virtually everything in the store is already discounted, but it'll have a larger discount if its on one of those. Likewise, don't assume Steam is always the cheapest place. Use savygamer.co.uk to point the cheapest deals out to you.

You sure you don't mean uPlay? That's Ubisoft's PC client, nothing to do with the WiiU. And if the black bars are at the top and bottom, it's an aspect ratio problem. It's likely you can't get rid of them seeing as the original Assassin's Creed didn't have non-widescreen support, but look in the graphics options anyway.Gorfias said:

These other guys are trying to get into the digital distribution market and have beat out steam a couple times in terms of discounts, for example Scribblenauts Unlimited was only 33% off on steam and its going to be 75% off on Amazon 12/24-12/26.
