Better, but still just a decent soul like. They removed the annoying weapon skill levelling and there's better environment variety, but otherwise its not that different a game, the story takes itself a bit less seriously which help.

I couldn't really get into 3, I've heard 4 is much better so I would go ahead and get it.
I bought Chaos; Child, under the idea that I greatly enjoyed Steins; Gate which is made by the same people and it is part of the same thematic series.
So far I cannot say that I'm impressed by the story. It's just so... standard anime. With a protagonist who veers off into fantasies like JD from Scrubs, only you control the overall outlook in the fantasies.

I liked 3, but got to one of the later levels where you're going through some sort of wunderwaffen tank factory built into a cliff and the change from a nice open desrt layout to a pretty enclosed level wasn't one I liked and so I never progressed past the first part of the level.
I have picked up 4 and may well p[lay it in a year or so.
