I've been choosing to play games on my PC more and more recently with the astounding lack of interesting console releases (strangely I prefer consoles over my $5,000 gaming PC, but that's another story and for the love of god another thread) and then I remembered (due to the alarming amount of time I spend on this site) that there are those cheap classics out there that everyone should play should they get the chance, but the problem is; what are they? How much does your pick/s cost? Why is it good? What about it is balls to the walls fucking terrible? How well has it aged? How old is it? Do you like Waffles?

EDIT: If you know of any free games (eg. Alien Swarm, or Portal like it was for the special Mac weekend, but on a permanent basis) that are available on Steam and what they are, how they play, are they decent? Replay value? Cookies?

I don't really recommend Steam as the best option when wanting to pick up cheap "classics".

http://gog.com is by far the best website I've encounted so far. Everything you could ever wish for in there, almost.

My personal favourite "Classics"?
Planescape:Torment and Fallout 1 and 2.

Also, yes.
I very much enjoy waffles :)

I dont want to nag but why has the Escapist become a advertisement platform for Steam?

is this to counteract the "piracy" threads that linger now and then or does this company have a hidden agenda to promote Steam??

the best advice for cheap games is to look around and not to continually rely on one supplier

I suppose it's because there is a large PC user base here. And Steam just happens to be one of the best sources for deals.

Perhaps it's the fact that it's the easiest place to find the old as shit games that are out there that are cheap as hell.

s0denone, I'm afraid your link doesn't work.

Just fixed it :)

And add "Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick" to that list of my favourite classics.

Hope you find what you're looking for in there. I'm certainly satisfied with the website.

Well, That is depressing, but I personally referred to much older games, unless yours was purely an example (which I'm assuming it was).

That is mostly due to the UK being different, I do not know why but retail in the UK is pretty damn competiive regarding PC games; where I live FO3:GotY is still 50bucks for example.

Anyway to be on topic:
Plants vs Zombies
Beyond Good and Evil
the Longest Journey
Deus Ex
Max Payne
Hitman

and of a ton more recent games like Company of Heroes.

I'd be happy to recommend anything in my list:
http://steamcommunity.com/id/project_xii/games?tab=all

Haven't regretted many of my purchases so far. Maybe Bad Company 2, but that's only cause I remembered 10 minutes into the multiplayer why I hated Battlefield 2 back in the day. A lot of awesome indie games on Steam too. I'd highly recommend Machinarium and The Witcher as two must buys.

Oh I agree with you, some things are terrible. I always wait for Steam sales.

$5000 PC? Holy shit. Post your specs, dude!

OT: Braid is nice, not sure if it's $10 or less, though.
Not as impressive as it sounds, I'm Australian, we get a lot less bang for our buck, out dollar is worth 90c to each American dollar, yet we pay double, sometimes triple for the same things as Americans, often more than that again for electronics. The computer is also a year old now so it would have dipped in value quite a lot since then. It's actual value as of this date I'm not sure, however I'm sure it'd make me cry like a little *****.

I am also curious, $5,000(AUS) is around £2,845.21 in sterling which is enough to have a PC blow to hole in any game.

Unless you bought it pre-built, in which case you'd get a lot less for your dollar than if you built it yourself.

True, but you're fortunate enough to not have to play the sickeningly outrageous mark ups, Australia pays more than any other nation for everything *fucked if I even know why, the only justification I've ever seen is "Just 'Cause" and the GST, but that's not nearly enough to justify it).

I picked out the specs, asked advice, had a pro order all the shit in and build it for me, so that's a bit more on top.

Don't get me wrong it's great, but when things are taken into consideration it's not nearly as amazing as it sounds.

Yay for Good Old Games!

Jagged Alliance 2 is like X-Com but the sprites have personalities.
Psychonauts. It lives up to the hype, also Dogun.
The Longest Journey. The best female character in gaming.
Beyond Good and Evil. The second best female character in gaming.
Arcanum. A super deep Steampunk RPG.
The Fallouts.
Freespace 2. Also download FS2_open to update some of the graphics and the engine.

Steam... I don't like steam. It is a necessary evil and that is all. I like to download patches and updates on my work computer and take the files home. I want to choose when to patch and i want to keep playing my game eventhough the files being downloaded are taking hours to do so. Steam is not cheap. Don't forget you are paying for your bandwidth as well and the games are eating into your monthly allowance. Aside from the aformentioned GOG, (No DRM) I've recently seen copies of Arcanum in some of the Melbourne EB Games for $5 so keep an eye out. I picked up Blood Money for $5 in a DSE last week.
