I'll pick cyberpunk anytime. Reasons, well steampunk seems kinda farytaleish to me while cyberpunk settings usually have that "this could totally happen one day feel to it". Also I think it was in a ZP about Bioshock where the line "how boiled water can form alliances?" ran through and it sums up my thoughts about steampunk pretty well.

i think both genres are similar?

they take place in eras where industry threatens the natural or human element by suplanting it with the mechanical.

But i love the napoleonic era which influences much of steam punks costume design.Steampunk is less nuancedin its explorations of its overriding themes, its more blunt, obvious and dare is say kid friendly generally having a degree of humour about it.

But i prefer the cerebral nature of cyberpunk, it has more weight and is more likely to leave a lasting impresssion on me.

Clockwork, brass, mechs, victorian over-the-top clothing. I love it all.

Steampunk is cool and all, but I think it's been used a little too much lately, whereas cyberpunk has sorta been left in the dust.
So for right now, I'm gonna say cyberpunk.
I really love stuff like Akira, and I hope to see it return soon.
How can you say that with games like Hard Reset and Deus Ex: HR recently being released?
What was the last steampunk game you saw?

When it comes to look I prefer steampunk. When it comes to being engaging and interesting as a setting I prefer cyberpunk due to the greater possibilities.

I prefer steam punk a lot more than cyber punk jus because I like the idea of steam punk fiction and the mechanic/victorian fashion.

I prefer the romanticism of steampunk over the dystopian inclinations of cyberpunk. I think as a whole steampunk can be more flexible than cyberpunk as a setting (at least it terms of adding value to the plot).

I'm sure this has already been said here already but Steampunk and Cyberpunk aren't two completely different things, aside from the aesthetic and the materials used. Steampunk grew out of Cyberpunk as a parody - rather than being technofetishism from the future, it's technofetishism from the past.

I'm a Steampunk and, from a purely aesthetic standpoint, I'd say it's my favourite but I do like the idea of having a body full of electronics and being able to internet from my head. So I'm going to pick both. Unless your Steampunk is a Nerf Maverick painted brown with cogs stuck on in which case I am going to have to ask you to step outside.

I imagine Cyberpunk meets involve fewer trips to Railway museums but they also involve less cake.

Well, of course we've got those, but we haven't really seen a serious interest in cyberpunk as there has been in the past.
Also, if you want a cool steampunk game, check out Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura.
It's available on GoG.com, which means it's almost guaranteed to work with any modern Windows OS (I have to run it as an administrator, though). It's a cool game, and it's made by veterans of the first two Fallout games.

Aesthetically I love both but I think Steampunk just about has the edge.

As an actual genre, I've not really read any steampunk fiction or seen a lot of steampunkish films. But then I haven't seen massive amounts of cyberpunk stuff except Blade Runner and the Matrix, and I'm not even entirely sure how much those count. So I can't pick.

I have a slight bias towards Cyberpunk as The Matrix, Blade Runner and Escape From New York are some of my favourite films. Also, Cyberpunk tends to be a lot more realistic and within the realms of possibility, which adds to the unsettling and claustrophobic nature of most Cyberpunk tales.

Dude, I absolutely LOVE Arcanum! I still have my old boxed copy installed. ^^
And sadly, nothing like it has been done since.

Why does Dieselpunk never get any love?

Tough question though. I guess I'm more interested in Steampunk at the moment.

I don't think one is necessarily better than the other. Both can be amazing outlets for creativity and style. I think that the fundamental difference is in perspective. Steampunk is looking backwards and innovating in a cool way. I can totally see the Dicken's Faire crowd jumping into this opportunity for self expression in a way that is already familiar, but with alternate technology edge. Cyberpunk is looking forward in new and exciting ways. Many of the technologies that have been mainstays for science fiction are either on the brink of becoming reality, or already have. The Cyberpunk fashion expressions are not familiar and comfortable (usually, unless the wearer is a huge Blade Runner or Snowcrash fan..) and give a tremendous amount of freedom to interpret the ways you think technology, societal morays, and cultural norms will impact the way people dress and wear their hair. I appreciate both and feel that there is a tremendous amount of ingenuity and creativity being implemented by both (unlike Goths or Emos who have the amazingly creative ability to shop at hot Topic and/or find black clothes, hair dye, and make-up...).

Isn't Cyberpunk just Steampunk with blinking lights on it?

Steampunk wins, because people who designed it have taste and fashion sense.
Cyberpunk is like someone saw Steampunk then decided to "Digitally Remaster" it.
