Steampunk: Your Thoughts...

I think it uses steam as a result of the people in said universe never discovering gunpowder. Which means the divergence should run further back than the Victorian era; explosives and gunpowder-based projectile weapons had noticeable effects on warfare after their inception.

Oh, right, I always say something crazy (psychotic) to balance out my genius. Um... It's less effective for getting a projectile to pierce armour and flesh to get to the nice soft intestines. Mmm, intestines.

Oh but it can be, just add Adventure! Or read "Larklight" by Phillip Reeve or Skybreaker by Kenneth Opel.

Never really liked Opel, I'll see if I can't find "Larklight" though.

Industrial Steampunk, or Nuclear Steampunk? Industrial Steampunk derives from the Industrial Era, and branches out that way, whereas Nuclear Steampunk is more or less where we are now, as a collective.

Its essentially dolled up versions of things that would run differently had we not discovered a better way to power things. I personally like the style. It seems a very unique style and can be more open to interpretation compared to modern mechanics which are sleek, black and make you invisible. With Steampunk; they hear, see, smell, and can sense you coming. I just like the idea of a rustic culture i suppose.

If I had the choice between a suit that would make Sam Fisher shat his pants, or a suit made of cast iron, about 10 inches thick running on steam and coal, id take the Hulking menace. I just like to make an entrance.

I love Steampunk, mainly because it's extremely detailed and really brings a lot to the imagination in my opinion.

Steampunk is interesting because it embodies the whole "what if" alternative timeline scenario. It's also fun because it often acts as a meeting point between genres. Historical fiction, drama, fantasy, sci-fi, romance, westerns... all of it can be blended with steampunk without it feeling like a violation of the genre. This blending means that fans of all other genres can enjoy steampunk: and that's what's the best part of it. It's a welcoming genre: it excludes no-one.

It's also often deeply entwined with a sense of cultural heritage, something that isn't seen much nowadays.

It's something to do with the twisted nostalgia of things, working with bits and pieces from a bygone age to try and represent things that exist now.

On top of being both elegant and quirky, it's a very rebellious idea. Steampunk designs revoke the simplicity and sameness of today's bland electronic life, instead offering a world where old meets new, innovation looks unique, and style was actually a viable concept. It's a celebration of a world that may have been, an idea that preys on our fascination with clockwork and complexity and gives us something interesting to daydream about.

Pretty much this really. I find the aesthetic wonderfull, so intricate and detailed. It's tinkering and engineering at it's prime. Plus I just lóve the Victorian age, it's an age of optimism, discovery and invention, where all limits are off. All the whacky and massive steampunk designs show that, and I love it.

Steampunk is AWESOME. It's much more... physical than our modern life. It's a heaven for a wrench monkey,an artist whose canvas is the world and paint is technology. Everything can be created from nothing,there is constantly smell of innovation in the air,even the sky isn't the limit thanks to airships and early planes. Everything is possible.

In short,if i had to choose between living in modern world or world of steampunk,i would choose the latter.

ehhh,it's not bad,but there is one thing it has going for it.

i don't think there is a WW2 steampunk game.

There is Warfront: Turning Point. But it's not actually steampunk,it's diesel punk.

It's a interesting setting, but it hasn't been used that often in gaming (As far as I know).

It would be interesting to see Bethesda pull off a RPG in a Steampunk setting.

I've always kind of liked the concept of Steampunk because it lead to a lot of interesting ways to portray it. Akira Kurosawa's "Steamboy", as an example, makes the steampunk genre seem futuristic, what with the giant steam-powered ships, among other things. Also, the game Damnation (even through how bad it was), portrays the steampunk genre in an alternate universe kind of way, like with what would happen if the Civil War was steam-powered.

A perfect example is Gears of War. The the atmosphere it can create is something no other theme can give. Gives an idea pf what might have been.

Lolwut? Choosing a pre-existing setting makes them more inventive than choosing different pre existing settings? I think "more unique" was the quality you where looking for.

On topic: I dunno, there's nothing about it that really sets it above any other setting or overtone to me.
