Books, Movies, Games, anything steampunk seems to automatically be awesome. I am tired of people giving me funny looks every time I mention it. My question is, how many in the escapist community are steampunkists?

I enjoy video games with it and Paper and Pencil Steampunk is good. It depends, but usually, steam powered turrets and clockwork guns are interesting.

Speaking of steampunk, Has anyone played Damnation? Is it any good.

I'm not a huge fan of steam punk, but I want this sooo much.

Define: steampunkist

If it means what I can only imagine it does, than I don't think that steampunk can stand alone to make something good. It worked well in FF7, (wich is still my favorite FF...the others suck though) it was a nice chagne from the others.

Eh. It has it's moments. I'm more a fan of grittier systems, though start to lost it when things start getting too absurd.

Like Bioshock. I really didn't care for many of their steampunk elements (a steam powered revolver? Seriously?) Not to mention I don't really associate advanced technology with the genre. More fantasy based.

See, I would love a steampunk themed guitar, some kind of hybrid of the following:

Steampunk fanatic.

And all material does need more than just a genre to make something good. Steampunk on its own couldn't hold for long.

I'm so old that I'm kinda stuck in cyberpunk mode.
The only cyberpunk i ever liked was Shadowrun for the genesis (not to be confused with teh SNES version)

Arcanum is a pretty awesome example of Steampunk

Cyberpunk is fun and all but it lacks the strong style the steampunk has.
What, are you suggesting cyberpunk is too old? What do you mean "strong style"?
I didn't say it was too old. What did I say that implied I thought it was too old?
The whole mechanical gadgets paired with Victorian style that are associated with steampunk.

It's easily preferable to cyberpunk, or umm...regular punk... What I'm trying to get across is that any time you can make somebody's intestines exit their body via their spine using nothing more than some boiled water and a few copper widgets, you've got a winning formula.

SEE ALSO: Bioshock, Rise of Legends, a load of other stuff I can't be bothered to name

I'd take post-cyberpunk.

Steampunk is definitely cool aesthetically. Who wouldn't want to hack up their computer to use an old school keyboard, or cobble together a printer that mechanically uses keys and ink ribbons? It's all about finding the most ridiculous way to recreate high tech results with low tech (seeming) parts.

Well, I'm sorry, but when I played Shadowrun it was still second editon and we did it with dice on a table top. When I talk about cyberpunk I'm talking about all those William Gibson novels such as Neuromancer and Mona Lisa Overdrive, Burning Chrome and other books that DEFINED cyberpunk as a genre, because videogame were still stuck in the monochromatic age, so please excuse my confusion. If any thing, steampunk seam to me like a regretful, nostalgic, and unlikely gaze into the nineteenth century, seeing as here we are in 2009 and there has been no contact or warp drive or any of the other things they said we were gonna have at this point twenty years ago. If you like steampunk so much, I suggest you go to your local library an check out a copy of The Difference Engine by Bruce Sterling and William Gibson. It's set in nineteenth century england and co-wrote by someone who invented other "punk" genres you may have already heard of.
I don't know if I just got burned or not, which probably means I did. Umm, I actually think I own that book already but have not got around to reading it yet. I guess I will put it on my summer reading list.

Yes, but I still don't see what you mean by "strong style", cyberpunk was speculative fiction, which means it is a view of something that could happen, but steampunk is a re-imagining, which means it never happened and it's more of a romantic fantasy.
Now I don't see what you don't see.
I do agree that they have two totally different styles of writing that are associated with them, and I enjoy both.

Steampunk isn't any better than any other setting; its just a type of setting is all. Frankly, I've seen it used both well and poorly, but I can respect those that use it, provided the world setting isn't the main focus of whatever you're doing; the characters and plot should always be the forefront, the setting is just the stage.

For those that don't know, this is how steampunk is typically defined: the setting includes technologies equivalent to or beyond modern devices in a few areas, but lacks a significant portion of modern technologies. A good example is the "Girl Genius" comic (google it); which has autonomous robots, beam weapons, gigantic airships, and sentient castles, but lacks computers (as we know them) radio communications, and a lot of other modern technologies. The setting may or may not contain supernatural elements, or it may contain technologies that accomplish things we might deem 'physically impossible.'

Neuromancer i actually have read. Playing the Genesis ShadowRun game prompted me to. It was my first run with Cyberpunk. I just havent heard of much of anything 'good' in CP to read/play.

I also just find the execution of Steampunk to be better in games like Arcanum than anything like Bioshock. That's mostly only because Arcanum also rides the fantasy wagon at the same time. There seems to be a larger -good- gaming market on SP than CP these days. I think people prefer to look backwards in time for game settings these days since we've spent 80% of the last 20 years of gaming looking forward...WW2 shooters not included.
