First off, mods, if this is in the wrong section please feel free to move it to the correct section!

Ok, onwards...

I'm currently doing an assignment on stereotyping in games, I need first hand research...that's where you come in!

If you could spare a few minutes just to give you thoughts it would be appreciated!

So, what do you think about stereotyping in games, how do you view the subject and what key points can you see which would require change?

Just a short paragraph will do!

Edit: The factors you need to consider are race and gender stereotyping in games and what you think of it.

Thank you! :)

Ok, so... Stereotyping in games, is RIFE!!!

Look no further if you want to find a scantily clad heroine, or an uber macho hero. Reference Final Fantasy. Tomb Raider, Duke Nuke 'EM, basically ANY fight game... There are too many to mention.

You're better off looking closely at WHY these stereotypes ARE so prevelent. RE: Extra Credits. (Academically sound) If you have a problem with legitimacy, you can always point out that 'coolness' in popular culture IS legit!

Also, reference Carl Jung's archetypes for extra teacher kudous.

Edit: Given your ED, sexuality. Read some basic femminist theory;

Care to expand? =S
"Let's go into war and climb mountains wearing our plate/steel high heels super combat boots!"

Expanded enough? :p
If that wasn't an amusing comeback...I would have slapped you with a wet fish.

If it's not to much trouble, would you care to maybe write a short paragraph, 2-3 lines explaining why?

It would be interesting to see how pop culture stereotypes entered video games, and check if video games have stereotypes that are unique to them, and then try to find out how those came to be and what function or purpose they serve.

Here's the thing. Stereotypes are generally alive and well even in real life. For every independent woman who wants to be seen as such there is a damsel in distress. That part is entirely dependent on what character each developer wants to show. As long as they fit their background, I'm good with it.

A race stereotype..well I'd like to point you to the Chinese man in Dreamfall, The Longest Journey, in Chapter 2 who sells you a lockpick.

He's awful. Really awful.

Same stereotype comes in Vampire Bloodlines with Mr. Ox. He's awesome. Why? He's mysteriously creepy as if he's playing the stereotype to hide something more.

If you kill him he dissapears. He may be a demon or mage or a variation of asian demon

It depends on how they're done and why they're done like that. If the devs do it for the hell of it, it's bad. If a character seems like a stereotype but hides more, I'm all for it.

Not good things would had happened in that case.
So let me show you instead;

Yes, her ass is amazing but her shoes are still high heels.
She's fighting, the hordes of the undead in a subway, wearing high heels.
It's... Stupid.
sooo...what your saying is; You dislike the over sexualised view of most depictions of women in games, especially when it makes no sense?

I think the point being made are 'games aren't realistic' which is a stupid point to make in the first place since most games these days exist purely as a simply means of escapism.

There are far more egregious costume issues there than the heels. For instance battle armour that is most lacking in protection the the area most likely to get hit (torso).
Costumes are generally supposed to look 'cool' and 'sexy'.
And without the armoured tits and skin tight ass kevlar(not sure how that works) how are we supposed to know who to drool over anyway? ;-p

The way most women are portrayed is pretty freaking juvenile. This coming from a guy who likes Moe characters. Case in point, a male version of a knight character is in full plate mail. A woman is usually wearing a chain mail skirt and has her mid section exposed. Why? Pure male titillation. Change this game industry.
They have a pretty bad stereotype personality wise, as well. A tough girl who has no interest in men and is very aloof. Why? That isn't empowering, that is stock. See Chie Satonaka for a good female character. That needs to go, too.

Guys are often portrayed as musclebound freaks. That kind of physique isn't possible. It is also disgusting to look at. How about a more reasonable and healthy build?
Personality wise they have a dreadful stereotype. A "macho" guy who is so manly he kicks people in the teeth for looking at him funny and doesn't have time for women. He often coincides with the musclebound build. Change it.

Gears of War is VERY stereotypical and frankly unrealistic, but I wouldn't like it any other way.

Hard, manly dudes who chainsaw people into half and can take more bullets than 50 cent and still survive > Normally built men who die with 1 bullet or later act all squishy from being fired at and takes up 50 months of a shrink just to be put back into society.

It's a game! Whatsoever is more fun should be available!
Couldn't care less if stereotypes and unrealism is inserted, so long as it adds to the FUN of things.
