One thing that really gets to me is how often people simply post in a thread to say it has been done before etc. Yes it is good to inform people of the search bar, but some topics are so controversial they need repeating.

Also it can be a pain to look through the thread list to find a good topic that died down recently, so personally I don't mind re-threads. This is just my opinion, so feel free to disagree.

Ironically, this has been done plenty of times before. :D

Once by me in fact.
But yeah, I agree with you - it's quite annoying.

I'm pretty sure there's been threads ranting on the quality of other threads before.

I jest. But seriously, I don't worry too much about it. If I don't see anything decent being discussed, I just don't post.

Give it three weeks of constant Superpower/wishes/favourite avatar Threads, Trust me, You'll learn to LOVE the searchbar.

And pretty much all the controversial topics are now in the Religion/Politics Section. Im keeping my activity in there to a minimum until i get my neo, I dont want to get dragged into anything.

Some people obviously think it's disturbing, and I can honestly see why. I must say though; it has become somewhat of a trend, and I'm not entirely certain that's the way it ought to be.

I'll have to agree, though. Just because it has been done before it doesn't make you special by rubbing it in everyone's faces.

I can disagree, I shall disagree. With the short time I've been here I have seen many repeat threads(a lot happen during game and movie releases *cough ME2 and Avatar*cough*) and it can get on my nerves because I really hate listing why I liked X movie or Y game or what webcomics I read many, many, many times.

I agree, I don't mind repeat threads. Yet I still tell people to search bar if there's a topic that already happened in my memory.

I do see that all the time and i just wanna yell at them because they're not contributing to the conversation just dismissing the topic because in reality the person has no opinion to share.

Thanks for posting this thread, it will somehow stop people informing others that their thread ideas have been done before (however, I'm sure they'll continue to tell them how abysmal 90% of the current threads are on this forum). I'm also sure this thread will also stop people posting 5 times on the same page about something that has nothing to do with the thread...

[/sarcasm]

Oh wait, this is The Escapist - what did you expect, quality discussion regarding complex subject matters? I'd try elsewhere. This thread has been done so many times it's practically irrelevant - it won't change anything - so why bother posting it?

Lately, with the loss of some of our more active forum goers do to life, mod wrath, loss of interest etc etc, the calls for the Search bar have died down quite a bit. While they can still be seen all over the place, they aren't as frequent as they were before. And no, the controversal arguement does not protect all threads. If I see the fifth "What is your favorite game" thread, I'm going down there and telling them to use the search bar (And would proably answer it to avoid a low-content post). Asking for an opinon that has been stated numerous times before does not count as controversy and when a thread about one topic is already active, we don't need another one.

Follow the simply month rule. Use the search bar, if a topic similar to yours comes up and if it is younger then a month, DON'T POST THE THREAD. It's a simple rule and it cuts down on repeat threads. If you choose to put the effort in, we will respect you.

It's all a matter of perspective I suppose. Some like repeat threads, some hate them. The Mods of course will tell you that threads should not be repeated unless it has been a significant amount of time since the last one existed.

I bother because well, it bothers me. I haven't seen a thread like this yet and I've been reading for a month so I figured it was safe.

I get it's got to be annoying when you find something and tell us all about it only to be told it was done last week but for the record it's equally annoying to be told the same thing when the thread was done only yesterday.
I see your side of the discussion but if you've read the thread then don't reply. When I'm reading someone else's thread and it is littered with "this has been done before" posts, then I get irritated. I want to read the discussion. Please.

And thanx for the empathy. It's nice to have people who give reasonable arguments and understand. You didn't offend me and all is fine.

Fair enough, but come christmas and the billionth 'why all the X hate,' 'is X over rated,' 'X is over rated,' 'X! A totally original review,' 'STOP THE DAMN X THREADS,' and 'Why X fans are idiots,' thread, you will be hammering search button comments into the keyboard like a pro, I guarantee it. This happens a bit all year, but really explodes in the Christmas rush, you'll be amazed at how much it annoys you, even if you don't think it will now...

X being that christmas' big release, this year I'm guessing either Halo: Reach, or Call of Duty: Still modern but not quite so modern but more modern than World War 2 Warfare

Sorry, this is unrelated to your comment, I just needed to say, I've been here a month longer then you, yet you have 8000+ posts. It truly left me gob smacked sir.
Glad to see you enjoy the Escapist so much, were you a lurker before you joined?

You might want to try using the "Quote" button and leave the various post numbers and all that rubbish in there, otherwise I'm not informed you've replied. First of all, it may bother you, but you can't do anything about it - it's the way the forum is, and will be - it's something that occurs in all internet forums.

At the end of the day if you don't let the person know it's a repeat thread, and you don't get onto people who post them, they are just going to continue to post them and the number of said threads will rise. By complaining you could be potentially stopping others posting repeat threads. This culture also teaches newer posters to use the search bar, and thus the same effect occurs.

On the lurking question, I just joined randomly one night, went to Forum Games and met some cool people like Neonbob and fell in love. I haven't stopped posting since and now I'm Master Archivist : P

The Escapist has a "Newest Posts and Hot Topics" box on the front page. Just having that kind of thing will force people to make new threads impulsively. Ironically, we're a bit too focused on the "Now" and the "Popular". Threads get 50 or so posts, then they kind of die. A few threads (about current events, no less) will get lots more, but they'll die too, because there really isn't any commitment around here.

The community as a whole is quite nice, I've made some good friends and joined some good groups. As for my avatar, Aisaka made it for me, which I greatly appreciate because I'm much to lazy to do it myself.
