Let's just hope that they can pull it off, eh?
Factions on the other hand may have some annoying missions (particularly the timed bonus conditions) but it was interesting and if you didn't like the game it was at least short. The area around Kaineng was pretty dull but the Jade Sea and Echovald Forest were very nice. It may be worth noting that I played the games in the order of Nightfall -> Factions -> Eye of the North -> Prophecies and that this might have affected my perceptions of the games.
Actualy the order matters :] Should you have started with Prophecies you would learn to appreciate every coin thrown in your way and also you would be rather limited in your choice of skills which made the game even harder (meant less henchies - its easy to finish the game with them now). The last campaing I finished playing was Factions and my Dervish had no problems with it whatsoever.
BTW: Adding heroes killed the games pve totaly

I liked this comic and article; but darn it Shamus... the Mythbusters parody is too good to be used as a one-off. Bring it back!!!

I'm the kind of MMO fan who hates every MMO. I view Eve as the only step in the right direction that the genre has (and I don't like Eve either). Ignoring all the claims they've made about GW2, if they can simply achieve what Eve did but in a ground-based MMO, I'd be impressed enough to try it.

The idea of a fully unsharded real-time character-centric fantasy MMO intrigues me, although I remain skeptical that such a game is feasible with modern technology. (and I don't think they've even verified that this is the direction they're going in, only implied...)

Even though I started with Nightfall I can definitely see the point about heroes. I think I've been on a quest with strangers maybe 3 times at most, because friend or heroes were available. GW2 sounds like it'll fix this though.

Also, keep up the good work Shamus. I've just finished your joint Fallout 3 LP and am slowly working my way through the archive of Stolen Pixels.

Colour me interested. I was rather ensconced in the first Guild Wars, though I never got Nightfall and Factions.

Of course, I love not paying a monthly fee. There's something about such a payment system that, even if I didn't find it somewhat immoral or rort-like, parents and others discerning with their wallet usage are very suspicious of.

Let's not forget, of course, that Guild Wars still made us pay for each campaign as though it were a considerably priced game. The price for that ends up being virtually the same as a few years on a monthly system, it's just up front. It's still preferable to me - just not much cheaper, so it's no big wonder how ArenaNet continues to fund servers without monthly payments.

Guild Wars 2, of course, looks to be very ambitious. Ambition in games design can either lead to great products or great failures. But a little risk-taking is exactly what the MMO world sorely needs right now.

Then would it surprise you to know that it's not an MMO?

It's creators dubbed it a "CORPG," or "Competitive Online Roleplaying Game." The distinciton is subtle, but it's there. Whether or not GW2 will be a true MMO, I don't know, I haven't been paying that much attention to it.
What? Yes, it's "Competitive", but how does that stop it from being "Massively Multiplayer", exactly? It is, just in different specific location types in-game.

I mean, if you say that the fact that all missions/questing is done in instances makes it non-massive, then you could say all the instances in WoW (there are, as I have read, quite a few) make it not an MMO. And if WoW isn't an MMO, what is? Who's going to make that argument? All such an argument does is put an ice pick in an arbitrary location on the sliding scale of instanced versus non-instanced.

In other words, this is a silly argument for them to be making in the first place. Guild Wars is an MMO - it is exactly what the genre name says on its tin. It's just not a WoW clone.

Guilt Wars = Guild Wars. Too hyped, I guess, to realize the spelling :p
I thought it was intentional as he feel guilty of being hyped? maybe I'm looking too far in to it.
Nope, that's clearly what he means. The names of Stolen Pixels are usually punny (and yes, just so you can tell, that was an intentional "misspelling").

Do you mean that column itself, or such things like them? He finished the LotR, but is now doing Champions Online.

Though I'd like to know what you meant before I go grading your Escapist timeline knowledge.
Ow poopies! My absence on the Escapist has been noticed. I didn't even know he quit with the LotR ones. Been a lurker for well over 1,5years and a member for like..1-2months? Been around quite a while, but that doesn't have to do with anything. Is the champ-online comic any good? Never got into the game, so I'm not eager to start reading it.
I read it on his website, or at least I think I did. It was pretty funny when I last read it, and it's the same style. Catch up with the end of LotR, then jump in and see yourself.

It's about damn time a developer decides to move on and evolve the idea of multiplayer adventuring.

Haha, funny stuff. I must admit that when I watched that video I was mentally checking off the stuff that wouldn't be what they said it would be.

Also, DANIEL DOCIU (sp.?) IS FATHER GRIGORI!!!

Everyone keeps talking about how great the engine for GW2 is going to be and that is certainly a huge plus. But what sold it for me was when I went to look up screen shots and art. The people in the game look like REAL people. You know some people are fat, tall, skinny, muscular, boney, etc. etc. If I have to play another fantasy RPG where all the ladies are models wearing chainmail bikinis and the men are trucks, I think I'm going to shoot myself. I mean, I realize that this can cause extra time on a game, but geez. People are individuals. If you just take the same model and copy-paste it a thousand times with different clothes it's still just the same person wearing different clothing.

I see a lot of people mentioning Half-Life 2 because of Father Grigori. This is a perfect example. Think of how different and individual all the characters in that game are from each other and then compare that to the NPCs in WoW... Yeah.

Guild Wars is and will always be my MMO. It's about the only one out there that I can actually say I own, that I don't have to pay someone else for the privilage of playing after I've paid a months worth of my car insurance already to get. Even if it is just a clone of the first guild wars, I'll be happy with it.
I (sadly) agree, but the things they're doing sound amazing and I've kept up with it on their site every day.

The new vids of gameplay from gamescom really make me jealous of those who could play.

They might be going for a "WoW Killer", but they do a good job saying that they are not interested in beating another game. More innovating a genre that needs innovating.

HA yes, that is what I said the first time I saw him too. What's cool is his son is working on the art in the game as well. The son is in this vid dealing with the cinematics of gw2:

I'm ... very sceptical about GW2, actually. I will INDEED buy this fucking game, like I did GW1, but at the same time, any studio can 'promise' something.. but delivery is really a different animal.. isn't that right Romero?

Romero: FUCK YOU!!!

((Yep.. still making Daikatana jokes... But don't worry Ubisoft, I'm sure you'll figure out what DRM is supposed to do some day, in .. I don't know.. 20 years? .. maybe? I might be cutting you too much slack... ))
