I mean honestly!Drop subtle hints about a game that builds Exitment not full blow Hype up a game.I mean Halo3 was way overhyped and because of that alot of people Hate Halo3.When a game is overhyped people get very disapointed and usualy hate a game if it doesn't live up to the hype. Overhypeing leads to a game being a hit or miss because of the high standard the hype set up.
Does anyone out there agree or have a seprate opinion?

That's their jobs. All that companies have to do is get us all hyped up so they can secure millions of copies to be sold day one. It doesn't matter if they're let down or not, their money is being spent.

You could just, ya know, disregard the hype and go your own way though, neh?

I think you're overhyping the overhype being overhyped... Sorry, its just one of those words that gets funnier the more you say it. I think the hype leads to increased sales at release, otherwise they wouldn't sink so much money into advertising. Either way, in the end people will either like it or not and some will just be bitter that the developers didn't make the exact game that they wanted.

Hyping is good for a game saleswise. Even if a game like halo 3 turns out to be a dissappointment among enthusiasts, they all bought the game on opening day before they found that out. Look at MW2, that was extremely hyped and sold extremely well, despite people claiming that it wasn't as good as the first one. Hype allows companies to get tons of people to buy a game at launch before all the reviews and criticisms come in.

I think people stopping believing the hype would be far more suited here.
Games will be awesome yes, but they're never what the company tells you they are mostly.

Aion you have taught me well.

Asking to stop the hype is like asking a troll to stop trolling...

...it's just not going to happen...

Hype is something that is always going to be around. It is completely subjective, unless you turn off your brain and follow exactly what the media tells you to.

Asking companies to not hype a product is like asking for world peace. Sure it would be the right thing to do but it just won't happen cap'n.

I sort of agree. You are right that some games get overhyped (like Halo) and don't truly deserve it (like Halo). What companies need to do is, rather than place all their bets on ONE game they think will win everyone's attention, spread out their "hype" across many games. Nintendo, Microsoft, etc etc put out many games a year. Not all of them are great, but only building up one or two of the best ones isn't the best idea. Building up dozens to a moderate level would probably be more effective than just the one or two extremely overhyped games.

Hype=advertising. Advertising=hype. It's the same damn rabbit seen through two different windows (yay hooray for non sequiters). But as numerous people have already said, hype is simply a fact of life, and asking it to go away isn't going to make it happen...no, shouting at it to go away won't help either.

Regarding OVERhype, though...I don't think it exists. Hype in and of itself is an attempt to appeal to our natural inquisitiveness as a species, to pique our interest and flick the little "ooh, shiny" switch in our heads. It's only when we're unable to control the number of ooh shiny switches being flipped that an "overhype" situation occurs...if you don't want to be inevitably disappointed by games, stop letting the companies that make them tell you EXACTLY how amazing it's going to be. Be a critic...lord knows plenty of people manage to be critical after the fact.

But I like how chicken tastes now.

On topic: Hype drives sales. Why would companies, which exist entirely to make money, shoot themselves in the foot?

I deleted about 3 friends today because they would not stop talking about and trying to get me to get the Halo: Reach Beta. Any more and I probably would've ended up punching my cat.

The lack of grammar hurts my brain...

Hype can be good, it helps sales and gets people excited. It's called marketing and sales, it's needed in the games industry.

Hype is a device invented by mean-spirited marketing executives who never discovered the true meaning of Christmas.
It's just advertising. The cynic in me wonders if it doesn't make people avoid buying the game out of spite, but that doesn't seem likely (see also: Internet boycotts consisting mostly of people playing the boycotted game).

I don't care much about hype, but it's annoying when the glories of a game are overextolled before release. Halo: Reach comes to mind, as does Heavy Rain and Mass Effect 2 and God of War 3 and probably more but this running gag is growing tiresome.

Then again, sometimes games are hyped because they're good.
