You're free to your own opinion but be warned a lot of the hate on this thread for GTAIV is simply people parroting Yahtzee's opinions, same for the love of SR3. I found parts of GTAIV hilarious, especially my version of Niko who I bought a Russian hat for ASAP. Also Brucie was awesome.Bento Box said:No, sir. Anyway, I'm interested in seeing what Rockstar is going to deliver. I just hope they bring back some of that Bully magic.
OT: Looking forward to this, I liked both SA and IV in their own ways though I liked the story more in the latter so I hope it will be a mixture of what was good in both.
It was released not long after console games were finally getting past a resolution of 640X480, and around that time everything was trying to go for the gritty realism. Rockstar tried to balance that with the standard GTA humor, and it just really... didn't awesome much.
Awesome's a verb now. You didn't know that? 'Cause it is. It's a verb. Awesomes.
As for GTA5, well, I'm kind of getting tired of the Americocentrism of all these games; I'd like to step outside New York, Miami, and Los Angeles for once please - that goes for you, too, Volition.
Ummm yes, SR2 was miles better than GTA4ChaoticKraus said:Because the SR games have a history of being soooo much better than GTA, right? ITS A NEW FUCKING GTA GAME! I don't really care in what direction they go with it. I prefer the humourous and crazy Vice/SA style but i'm not gonna front, GTA IV had some really touching moments and overall Rockstar pulled off a very weighty story without being heavy-handed.
^thisCactoos said:God, oh GOD let it be more like San Andreas and less like the gritty angst-fest that was GTA IV.
Seriously, GTA IV was just boring. San Andreas is still one of the best gaming experiences ever in my opinion.
I'm kind of failing to see how exactly GTA IV was in any way innovative. Now, before you say anything, I mean innovating in the way that it did something entirely new. What GTA IV was, was an extremely (and, I can't stress this enough: EXTREMELY) well made, story-focused sandbox.Tips_of_Fingers said:I've been reading through the comments within the thread and can't help but be angered by people saying that GTAIV was boring. Seems like The Escapist doesn't like innovation or change...Or a game that shows the sheer power of videogames.
Narratively, graphically and thematically incredible, GTAIV is a masterpiece, and I cannot comprehend how people hate it. "It's not like San Andreas" is not an argument. Judge it on it's own merits.
To say that GTAIV had was too serious is to completely miss the satire of the whole game. There are unlimited moments of hilarity within the game but the humour is more subtle and I find that funnier than the in-your-face laughfest of San Andreas.
I know it's all subjective...people's opinions etc...but I still cannot understand how people can ostracise a game as progressive as GTAIV.
OT: I'm not particularly excited by the announcement of a trailer, but I will definitely be buying GTAV.
I loved the cut-scenes. They were funny, well-paced and astonishingly written. I also enjoyed majority of the side-characters (Little Jacob, anyone?) and the many, many choices you had to make regarding those side-characters throughout the game.
See, my problem with GTA IV is... hard to explain. While the characters were well-written, I just didn't feel connected to any of them. Hell, I actually DISLIKED Niko.
The missions. They were mostly very plain and unimaginative.
The flying. Good GOD, was it fucked up badly on PC. Why did they have to change the simple (and most of all, WORKING) controls from San Andreas? Also, why didn't they include planes? Or a jetpack? There's no one out there who can say the jetpack wasn't barrels of fun in SA.
Why did they add flying out through the windshield when crashing at high speeds? Who the hell felt the need for that kind of annoying realism? Or why did you have to lose HP when exiting the car while driving? I used that feature in San Andreas a lot because... well, because it was PRACTICAL and FUN.
Seriously, the list goes on and on.
So yeah, it's mostly the little things. My preferences regarding characters are just me being a dick, I guess, but the little, annoying, "realistic" features killed the fun for me.
And that's why GTA IV was boring.
I'm talking history here, were counting GTA3, Vice City and San Andreas aswell. Saints Row aint got shit on that line-up.Macrobstar said:Ummm yes, SR2 was miles better than GTA4ChaoticKraus said:Because the SR games have a history of being soooo much better than GTA, right? Well SR doesn't go back before this gen, so all we have to compare it to is GTA: Immigrant bowling simChaoticKraus said:I'm talking history here, were counting GTA3, Vice City and San Andreas aswell. Besides, saying SR2 is better than GTA4 is kinda wrong. That's just your subjective opinion. I'm pretty sure many people would prefer GTA4.
Really interested to see if it avoids going back to the San Andreas type GTA because SR seems to have a good grip on that market (especially if the 3rd is good/reviewed well) and instead stick with the more realistic GTAIV model... not long to wait though! only 8 daysAppleShrapnel said:Irrelevant. And plenty of people would agree with Macrobstar, so I dont see how thats a pertinent point.ChaoticKraus said:I'm talking history here, were counting GTA3, Vice City and San Andreas aswell. Saints Row aint got shit on that line-up.

Macrobstar said:compared to GTAIV yes. Saints Row pretty much picked up where GTASA left off with the craziness that GTAIV left out. the diversions were more interesting and the game included Co-op (the multiplayer wern't that good but niether was GTAIV's).ChaoticKraus said:Because the SR games have a history of being soooo much better than GTA, right? My feelings exactly.TimeLord said:Is it going to be more like San Andreas or Vice City?
If no then I don't care. I loved SA and VC and hated IV.
Nah, it has more to do with the setting. For one, I'm sick of modern city sandboxes. Another thing I'm sick of in games: Driving cars. Red Dead Redemption offered a unique (and beautiful) setting for video games and had a great story to go along with it. And I found myself getting attached to my horse, and actually took a moment to pay respects when a cougar got to it.JoJoDeathunter said:One word explains all: YahtzeeCasual Shinji said:It's odd how GTA4 has become the plague dog that it is the eyes of this community yet Red Dead Redemption is hailed as a masterpiece, despite suffering even worse from the issues for which GTA4 is loathed.

Probably the best explanation Ive seen, although I think caution is a better approach then optimism.PlowmanMk said:Realism wasn't really the psyche of IV either. Sure it wasn't as crazy as the prequels, but it had a solid story and great atmosphere.
I think the main problem was the gameplay/ missions were a little bland and repetitive. IV had the makings of a great game, it just wasn't thinking outside the box. It was missing some of its crazy streak.
(Compare it with Red Dead, which is a similar build but with a greater variation of things to do)
People need to be more optimistic about GTAV, and need to stop comparing it to its prequels.
