Storyline confusion.

For those of us who enjoy playing games for the story content there's no doubt been times when you've picked up a sequel and from the first few minutes your eyebrow raises itself from sheer "Wha?" reflex. A more recent time for me was picking up Halo 3, in the beginning you see a big flaming object entering the atmosphere. Then another smaller object not only apparently 'breaking off' of it, but somehow managing to manuver to some degree. 'Lo and behold it's Master Chief! Yes so his armor gives him the godlike power to survive re-entry, and he enjoys jumping out of perfectly good spacecraft, but at the end of Halo 2
He's on the covenant 'ark' ship, where the last surviving prophet is and 'finish the fight'.
So what happened? Did he hijack onto another ship or did he just decide to jump out of a perfectly good spacecraft for no reason?

I'd appreciate it if there was someone who could make sense of this. Likewise feel free to share your moments of confusion in gaming story.

Basically when

I found out that the Ansem in Kingdom Hearts wasn't really ansem but the hearless of someone else who was POSSIBLY ansem but it turned out it wasn't ansem and then we met up with Ansem's nobody who wasn't actually ansem but actually Ansem's assistant Xeonorht.

Yeah, the whole plot in the Kingdom Hearts series is fucked up, to this day I still have no idea what the hell Kingdom Hearts is.

Master Cheif jumped off the covenant ship. Stupid move, but it may have saved his life. Maybe. As well, the ship he was on wasn't the "ark". The "ark" was the mechanism triggered on earth to get to installation 0. I played both games a good few times before figuring it out myself.
... but what about when Chiefy gets to the Cartographer, and asks Guilty Spark where they are? Spark responds, "Why, The Ark, of course."

when the cake was a lie? that really confused me.
well, someone had to say it :p
and MC jumped out of the ship to get away from the overwhelming covenant forces as i understand it, and the super pressurized gel layer in his suit cuishoned the fall. (which is actually possible, something suspended in a container of water will not be harmed if you drop said container.)

It isn't a game, but years ago when I read Tamora Pierce's books, I skipped the third out of the quartet and didn't realise it until 3/4ths of the way through the book. XD

I'm delighted I get to be the first person to point at Killer 7 in this thread. After playing the game I felt confident in my understanding of a basic discourse on war versus chaos and American politics.

And then this guy wrote an enormous 40 page thesis explaining the multi-layer concepts occurring in the game:

I don't even pretend I know what the f*** that game was about now.

Okay so no one's played MGS games? I mean those things are fucked up. I played MGS 2 all the way through and got so angry with the writing that I nearly pitched my tv out a window. That was some ridiculous plot.

Kingdom Hearts was a nice idea, just the storyline made absolutely no sense. It's too convoluted for its own good, and this is supposed to be appeal to a younger audience? I too am confused as to what Kingdom Hearts is supposed to be.

Kingdom Hearts wasn't hard to understand at all for me. For me, the most confusing plot element was in Chrono Cross, that being the Dragon Gods.

I understood everything about Mother Brain becoming FATE and creating the archipelago, as well as the death of Lavos creating the two worlds and why Serge was the Chrono Trigger, plus evreything else... but really... what was up with those dragons?

Still wrong. The Forerunner structure on Earth is a portal The Librarian built before she(?)died that leads to The Ark, aka Installation 0.
The ship was the "key".

Here's a simple description of the nature of Kingdom Hearts and a simple plotline synopsis.

Kingdom Hearts is the place where all life originates from. Where life is created. The Heartless want Kingdom Hearts as a heart factory to restore their lost hearts. The Nobodies want Kingdom Hearts as a heart factory to restore their lost hearts. Sora wants to stop them so that people can still be born and have hearts (based on my guess at his motives. Although I doubt Sora was contemplative enough to know what he was doing.)
