Strange Character Designs

The toeless stockings with purple toenails just make it so much more bizzare. Oh and her battle mode is uh, different? I suppose

I'm rather sure the first version isn't even a weapon, just an elaborate sheath. She transforms back into the first form after a win sometimes. I guess the apparent world destroying Kusanagi can't just be shown as such small blades all the time. Though her Astral looks like the sword reforming into the one in her picture and slashing the enemy. Well that's the last second or two of the Astral anyway, the rest is an elaborate speech.

Yeah she's the final boss by the way. She's gonna destroy the entire world don'tcha know? How anyone could take that threat seriously I don't even know and she's my main character online.

Well, I can think of a strange character design. Specifically the orbital frames of ZoE series. I mean, really? Cockpits between the legs. Ok, it might have a practical application in regards to steering the frames around but still. It's just weird.

I know it's not video games, but the characters in the Pathfinder tabletop are horrifically overdesigned. Look at this:

it dawned on me...THERE IS SOMETHING WRONG WITH HIS MOUTH!! I mean that mouth looks pretty weird and I was just questioning the design of Ty for the whole video.

As someone who owns this game, I also agree. Wtf is up with Ty's mouth? I can usually forgive some stylistic decisions in games and movies, but this is just...weird. If I remember correctly, all the Tasmanian Tigers (as well as dingoes in this game) have that sort of mouth. It's also very strange when you consider real Tasmanian Tigers had the widest gape of all mammals (reported over 100 degrees).

Other than that, I can agree with the sentiment of others and say "JRPGs".

There's nothing wrong with putting a lot of thought and care in to what basically amounts to a lore character. Was Arthas Menethil, the Lich King, overdesigned?

There's a difference between being detailed and being "what the fuck am I even looking at".

Arthas is quite horribly designed, as is most things by Blizzard (especially post WC3).

There's a lot of things in WoW that became more and more ridiculous in design. I remember one of my friends in physics club saying that back when the level cap was still 60, the epic gear was designed to look epic because you reached that amazing limit of level 60! But now with each expansion, epic gear has sort of gone from cool to ridiculous and then to mundane. The one thing that I like to look at is the shoulderpads for each set because they are usually the height of craziness. Take a look at the Shaman Tier gear:

Like, what the flip is THAT on Tier 3? "I know what will make those shoulders more effective for Shamans!" Says the craftsman, "A set of giant red suns sitting on the shoulders with spikes that will jab their comrades if they come too close!"

There's all sorts of things you could make fun of with the gear in WoW. Give the warlocks props though, at least they know how to sport those flashy colors with demonic looking eyeballs!

The other thing that pops up most of the time is weaponry in it. I remember in WotLK there were a set of axes that had smaller axe blades protruding from the head at odd angles.

Proving that even with a distinctive silhouette, you can make a shitty design by throwing way too many layers on it. The overall look of Space Marine Power Armor is fine, easily recognizable. But when you vomit a million rivets, carvings and badges on it, it becomes cluttered and busy.

I feel like there are very few studios out there who could ever hope to top Shiny Entertainment in that department. Their first character was an earthworm in a muscle suit and things only got more warped from there.

I think my favorite may be Kurt Hectic, the man with a gun for a head.
